Yeah, I think SD was a Big Muff into a Marshall, which is pretty much the worst sound ever (for chords at least). So yeah.. kudos to Butch Vig for making it work.

Yeah, Muff into JCM800 sounds right. I don't know why Butch didn't plug him into a Fender or Vox, but the will of The Corg was probably strong.

There's a Chicago Music Exchange (I think) video of Billy talking about his rig at the time (morbid curiosity on my part..) and yeah, Butch's initial reaction was "that's gonna sound like crap ya know.."

it's this one from the old forum....

I found out recently that "1979" was completely plaigarized from Milwaukee band Sometime Sweet Susan. I discovered this while interviewing SSS's former guitar player for a piece i wrote for the Milwaukee Onion, which was published this week. He said that "1979" was ripped off from their song "Point," and being skeptical of such things, i listened to the song (their old drummer burned me all their old CDs in order to refresh my memory of the band, since they broke up in 1996). Anyway, i listened to it, and holy fucking shit. It's the same riff down to the guitar tone and the bassline. It's ridiculous. "Point" came out in 1993, by the way, and "1979" was, what, 1996?
It's pretty close no doubt, but such things don't bother me, as has been pointed out, it's simple stuff, and the original is missing the big choruses.
The main riff, especially the bass line, were lifted by Cap'n Corg. But his was far more pop-oriented with a big butt rock chorus, as mentioned.

Even the drum beat is the same. Maybe subconsciously ripped it off? But there's no way this was coincidence. Proximity and time are way too close as well. He heard this song for sure.

Okay that's more than a I - IV progression. The tonality, synth stuff, guitar style.... definitely a lift. They might have gotten the better song out of a really cool arrangement so.... share royalties?

The geography always lent itself to convincing me that it wasn't coincidence, either. The chances that Billy ran into SWS in a random club in Milwaukee or Chicago? Pretty good.

Yep. And I didn't mean to imply the simplicity of the chords meant it could be coincidental, more that it was extra lazy of a rockstar to need to lift it.

Also, that's a cool song (the original) and the rest of his compositions on that sprawling turd are terrible.

I always thought Billy stole the riff for I Am One from the Poster Children "Eye."
I could be mistaking the PC song, but definitely the pumpkins ripped off the Poster Children sound for Gish.
