Re: Kids instruments for XMAS

My daughter played drums (kit) from age about 8 all the way through the music grades to 'grade 8' (I don't know what the US equivalent is to music grades? In the UK music grades go from 1 to 8; 1 is learner, 8 is advanced or whatever).

Anyway, my point is that we have an electric kit and an acoustic kit at home but she has always also played orchestral percussion in good local orchestras, and has only really had the two drum kits (and pads) to practice on for any length of time. Also, although she studied 'drum kit' (Jazz/pop/latin etc), it has been totally possible to apply it to orchestral stuff.

Obviously mallet/tuned stuff not so much!

I'd say just get a full size kit (maybe electronic?) because it's the least likely to put her off playing, and the most important thing is to keep the enthusiasm alive, isn't it? Electronic is potentially more playable at random points in the day which is why we got one, even though they are IMO not fantastic.

Dunno if that helps.

I haven't heard much about those. In the past most "junior" stuff I've seen as far as drumsets has been really bad. If she's big enough to comfortably play on a smallish "real" kit I'd look for one.

To kind of make sure she was/remained interested, I got her a practice pad and some sticks a while back, then set up a bucket as a floor tom. She played a lot for a while and keeps asking about getting a kit, so I’m gonna get her one for XMAS - any ideas on how to approach this would be appreciated.

12 YO daughter wants a violin, so if anyone has ideas on this, also TIA.

Budget is 300-400 each for these, used is OK and I’m open to any input.

Thanks

I bought my niece and nephews a Taylor GS Mini, I thought it was going to be a giant hit. They live on a farm, start them early ... they have the background I never did.
They lost interest instantly. However, everytime I visit, I love it. Cut to this year, the niece now 11, is showing interest again. I think with a small size guitar, even that can be a long game play - The neck aside, a full size can be pretty frustrating to learn on as a kid, the edges of the lower bout of the body can be uncomfortable to sit and play for long periods of time. I'm never upset if I play on a 3/4 guitar outside of wanting to play a gig
