They are both terrible, but Anselmo makes Pantera the absolute worst. Fuck that guy.

Pantera is fine I guess, but the people at this show were incredible. I think this was when MOSHING really got to the mainstream and these fuckers were moshing everywhere. Waiting to get a fucking hot dog in line, MOSHING. Waiting to take a piss at the urinal, MOSHING. Two dudes were MOSHING at a pay phone.
I saw them in '99 opening for Sabbath. I got hit with the late Vinnie Paul's drumstick.

Honestly these are both wah pedal bands and therefore it’s embarrassing to have an opinion on how one somehow could be better than the other. Sure, you can use a wah pedal and have it not ass up your music, possibly. I bet someone has even made music that was better for the inclusion of such a pedal. Maybe. Maybe not.

But these bands that shove the wah pedal down the front of the pants? You’re better off, once you catch wind of that telltale honk, saying “hey, this is the bad music. I don’t want to listen no more.”

Vulgar Display of Power is the only thing I need to listen to from either of these bands. But that record sounds cool. To me they were corny in one direction before that record, and then doubled down on the aggro afterwards and went corny in the opposite direction. Waffles for incredibly dumb lyrics, about being an idiot bonehead.

Krev wrote: Fri Mar 11, 2022 2:36 pmDimebag's guitar was higher quality than Layne's yarling, though.
As expressions of raw musical talent they're pretty evenly matched, IMO, esp on the debuts where both bands haven't quite figured it out so Layne and Dime's unfettered raw abilities are doing the heavy lifting.

Dime's playing is absolutely incredible most of the time, but some of the playing on Cowboys (not my favourite Pantera record, FYI) is just staggering.

But throw in Jar of Flies as the wild card and I have to give it Layne overall.

Thinking about this, and my love of records that come in response to a success, reminds me just how much I enjoy the self-titled AIC album. A lot in common with The Great Southern Trendkill as it happens. It's a pity so much great work is born of the struggle to coexist with success.

Aside from blues hammer-y soloing I don't even find wah pedal that offensive. Dimebag's scooped Crate-like tone is way worse.
