This...
Seems kinda familiar...
(Still a great tune. Hell, really great tune. Just sayin...)
Re: This song is kind of based on that song
12The verse/pre-chorus here...
Is pretty darn close to the intro/verse in this number...

13The guitar solo here...
Seems a whole lot like Mick thought he could play the solo to another tune a whole step higher, and no one would notice...

14Alright, I'll bite. This is 100% not intended as some sort of backhanded observation, as I have a high opinion of both works in question, and whether this is true or not I don't consider it irksome.
Having said that, I've long felt that Young Marble Giants' "Wurlitzer Jukebox" has more than a little in common with Brian Eno's "Golden Hours."
Listen to the two below, and feel free to tell me if you think the link is tenuous or if this claim holds up...
If the former (released circa 1980) isn't, musically at least, a conscious homage of sorts to the latter (released circa 1975), then I think something may have been picked up via osmosis, no?

This may have been more intentional:

Eno, YMG and Broadcast all rule of course.

The band that listed the songwriting credit for “Mr. Whirly” as “mostly stolen”.
I love the ‘Mats.

20Oh, if you separate somewhat the granulated synth sounds, BBC Radiophonic Workshop stuff, and the United States of America-isms from their sound, that last Broadcast album for sure has some Young Marble Giants-like qualities. And it's not just the use of drum machine. Loved that album to pieces when it came out. Still do.
Tangentially, on the Tender Buttons tip...Happened to notice then that the guitar triads in "Michael A Grammar" sound similar to those in Interpol's "Obstacle 1" from a few years prior. Never been that into Interpol, and it could just be a coincidence, but that single did get a lot of airplay once upon a time, so maybe said trope was in the air.
Some of the best to ever do it.Eno, YMG and Broadcast all rule of course.
