Hot take: while super influential, I wouldn't say any of those records are anywhere near their best work. Like most people, those 3 were the first (and for a while the only) Motorhead records I heard - I liked them, but it wasn't until I worked through their discography and hit the real paydirt from Bastards onwards that I became a real fan. IMO, a band cruelly represented by their critical consensus.

Overkill will always be my fave followed by Bomber and Ace of Spades (=the usual suspects). I also find Iron Fist underrated and some of their better tunes were b-sides only even if theyv'e been added as bonus-tracks to the cd reissues.

That said, I agree that they didn't really fall off like people claim and the discography is more diverse than generally given credit for; Another Perfect Day is SO not a typical Motörhead album and while Orgasmatron may be fairly typical, Laswells weird production gives it a unique feel in their catalog.

The last 30 years of their existence had too many albums with the band spreading themselves thin but I REALLY like the following 5:

1916-their most diverse and "mature" record; I always dug it even if the production is a bit too "american" sleaze/post-GNR slick
Bastards-some crap here but 75% or so is really inspired and quite novel for them.
Sacrifice-sounds like someone had heard both Helmet and 90s Sepultura here. Many fans hate it; not me, I think it's really cool and most songs are good
Overnite sensation-their most underrated album IMO; perhaps very little "new" stuff for the band besides some more poppy vibes but the material was very strong.
Inferno-GREAT! Production is too "modern metal" and it became the blueprint for the albums that followed but this one just rocks, lowkey one of my favourite "heavy" rock albums of the past 20 years.

Otherwise, March or die was borderline terrible and records like Rock'n'roll, Snakebite love, Hammered, We are Motörhead etc. are only for the most die-hard of the die-hards with too few standout tracks but none of those are *bad* IMO, just various degrees of "uninspired".

I love Hawkwind as well but even their best albums are bogged down by too much weedy stuff...

I agree with nearly all of your post except:

1. IMO Orgasmatron is a stinker - the band haven't quite figured out their dynamic as a four piece but their efforts are ruined by Laswell's horrific production - so many baffling, unsympathetic choices.

This, March Or Die or Hammered are the three where they really miss the mark (though 'I Ain't No Nice Guy' is one of my favourite songs ever by anybody - play that fucker loud when they burn my body, please).

2. Rock 'n' Roll and We Are Motorhead have some very strong stuff but are a bit hindered by poor sequencing - the weak stuff is all bunched up at the front, but they both get real good from the middle.

No way, latter-day Motorhead is WAY more world weary. Ever heard 'One More Fucking Time' ?

Hawkwind are great but Motorhead (esp Another Perfect Day and most of their records from the 90s onwards) mean way more to me.
Forget "One More Fucking Time"...
