The R.E.M. thread led to this. I much prefer it to the original. It's really tense - like being stretched to the limits of happiness while the vocals temper the limpid pools of sound.

That Eels guy is good as disguising ultra sad songs with kinda happy melodies.

I always laugh when I hear that Everclear song, “Father of Mine”, which is like an uptempo power pop song with cringey lyrics about how his daddy abandoned him, beat his mother, and now he’s forever scarred as an adult, but with a bunch of celebratory “oh yeah!’s” thrown in for good measure.

Pernice Brothers, fuck how could I forget. Most of their songs are like this.



This one might be in a minor key, but it's not "sad" music, and it's rather pretty.



Some people consider this one sad. Certainly is upbeat music.
