I don't really like heavy metal at all, though I will concede 80s Metallica is one of the best exemplars of that genre. Stooges and AC DC (bluesy groove rock) are probably closest comparisons to 90s Metallica

The band was absolutely hated by a large segment of their fan base for making those albums.
Not if someone has actually heard COC after Pepper joined the band...

Love this album, but it's certainly not consistently hated. More of a case if you would have said you liked Cut the Crap or maybe even Give 'Em Enough Rope.
I would LOVE to see someone really go to bat for Cut the Crap
Teal Stripe - heavy indie rock
Inverted Candles - antifascist blackmetal
Mirage Music Club - YMO worhip (let us score your indie game)
Service Model - we have Aphex Twin at home

Only one of those tiresome, edge-lord contrarians who constantly boasts about hating the Beatles, chocolate and pizza would go to bat for that awful album and I wouldn't even believe them.
Literally. I'm at that album SUCKS. Bernie Rhodes' turd record Joe made to get closer to being out of the contract.

The only Metallica album I actively dislike is Death Magnetic. The recycled riffs, the extreme compression, it just all seemed insulting, like they were trying to superficially capture a moment that happened 20 years prior to please a particular sort of fan who isn't going to be pleased with anything they make anyway. I think there were some pretty good songs on Load and Reload. St. Anger could have been fine if they used snare wires and released it as a hardcore album under a different name, like The Jimmy Hetfield Experience.

It's hard to find a SONG on that record that doesn't suck, much less the whole of it's parts. I shamefully am ok with 3-Card trick, it's sort of charming Synth-Oi-Ska mess, I think you could hide on a mix tape next to some kind of other white boy reggae from Ze Records.

Conversely, Sandanista is the missus and my favorite Clash....so maybe it's getting it's due.

FINALLY starting to hear more of that. Sandinista is just one of those ideal kitchen sink albums, for me, a bit of everything. Maybe as more people catch on it'll finally get the DELUXE reissue treatment.
