American Music Club is my favorite of these bands, but I'm not sure if they are the best example of this, uh, genre. They had a surprising amount of upbeat/tragically funny stuff.
This is a fair take but they were always grouped together with this scene whenever anybody talked about them; I also think if you listen to that Eitzel solo live thing (
Songs of Love Live) that the raw core of the classic AMC songs runs w/ the pack.
I also think Vudi's brilliant embellishments were often quite goth-ish in a very subtle way.

I am re-listening to Bedhead before I vote; I remember PRFv.1 rated them highly too but I never really thought they were very memorable. We shall see.
In hindsight I feel I should have included Seam (who I also never really liked) . Too late now.

It's really Low vs. Bedhead here, and Low wins hands down.
Red House Painters fucking suck. I don't get the appeal at all. What I get from RHP is a soundtrack to some men's march.

My vote for Bedhead still stands but I've got to put some respect on Duster's name.

That occurred to me, as well as Microphones/Mt Eerie. (either I'd take over sex pest Kozelek)
*though maybe this stuff is categorized as lofi. Sub genres suck.

That's where I land.
American Music Club is a favorite of mine, too, but I don't compartmentalize them with the others here, like at all.
Fucking real shame about Koz. Love some of those albums immensely.

Low hands down, with AMC second. Low shouldn't be penalized for having a large discography that goes in different directions. That's the sign of an interesting band. On the other hand, I never got into Bedhead, and The New Year sounds like more of the same. RHP also is way too dry for my liking, although I like some of the SKM stuff but pity about him being a bitter, toxic male douchebag.

Bedhead is probably a top two or three band for me, just 100% has my number. i guess if I wanted to toss in an honorable mention write-in, it would be Rex.

I think that comeback album from 2019 is the best thing they've done, better than the original run.

Codeine did this so well that I'm reluctant to even check out Low or Bedhead. They were great live last November.
