Out of the four choices I picked Layne Staley (Eddie Vedder has more hairrl but I like AiC more than Pearl Jam) but where's James Hetfield? I thought he was the undisputed king of hairrl.
Years ago I did a humorous bit on my old radio show about the origins of the hairrl. I traced it back to Iron Butterfly, Tim Buckley and Cat Stevens. Any more?

Iron Butterfly and late-60's psych in general seems to be the root ov yarl.

I always thought David Clayton Thomas (Blood, Sweat&tears) was the OG but this thread has made me revisit Iron Butterfly and indeed, Doug Ingle is pretty damn yarly at times. I'll spend some time with Vanilla fudge and It's a beautiful day tomorrow to see if there's some bonus yarls to be found...

That depends... are we voting on worst offender or who we'd prefer to listen to? Worst offender is easily Creed Guy. Of all of 'em, I'd much rather be listening to Layne.
