It was definitely a thing back in the 90s. There is a long list of albums that could be mentioned here to which that applied, sometimes the songs themselves were edited too.

Post 9/11 was a weird time. Changing a a meaningless album title because it might be perceived as terrorism, totally normal stuff. I guess they went back to the original version for reissues.

I don't blame The Coup (Boots Riley's group) for later changing this album cover though, holy shit (zircona1 just beat me to it)

Generally I don't think a record label gets it right when it tries to tell a band what to do, but I think we can all say that Columbia (then distributing Def Jam) made the right call on the original title for License To Ill.

I got a nod from a respectful source that the opening song on the first Shellac record should have been called "My Black Bass" as a nod to Bob and his playing prudence.

So there you have it!

The reissues of Killing Is My Business... And Business Is good! come to mind.

Thought of another one: Cannibal Corpse. They've had a few album covers that were revamped (Vile, Tomb of the Mutilated, possibly more).
