It's only a slur if we act ashamed of it. Shitlibs have shied away from the concept of being woke because conservatives say it like it's a bad thing. But the term comes from black vernacular and it still means the same thing when said in the right context.

I think this poll is unfair without a third option of Not Crap.

Wrong thing to worry about since it's nothing you can control. People can use words however they want. It's only a liability if, as the above poster said, you believe it is.

Y'all are right. I think the resurgence of the American right has me on my back foot. This is not a time for letting them dictate the rules of the game. Thank you for speaking up for reason.

Quite bad coming out the mouth of a Ron DeSantis or Elon Musk type person. Good god.

Neutral/not inherently bad in other circumstances.

But I kind of hate the culture wars at this point. Sorry. As a dude who gets good stuff done in other facets of his life, I don't feel the culture wars are necessarily that productive. Prolonged engagement in this arena can make a lot of otherwise okay people seem less appealing, and lead to infighting. Even people who seem to be on "the right side of history" can be very petty and overbearing and engage in all manner of groupthink/personal dickheadedness. And yet, assuming the stance of a Bill Maher sort of cultural critic doesn't cut it. Growing tired of shit on the left also isn't an excuse to turn conservative; I've made it a point not to fall into this trap. Broadly, I agree with a lot of progressive ideals, but often feel the need to tune people out. Time is limited, and I often prefer to focus on other things.

For a war to happen first there needs to be an attack. We shouldn't be complacent when they attack us.

Fixed.

But I should contextualise a little. I had this poll in my head in the UK context, where it has no relation to its origin in African American language. I was looking at a London news account on the Socials about a new tram/bus hybrid and a bunch of weirdos started calling it a “woke” bus… it seems to now just mean “I’m not a libtard and anything I don’t like is ‘woke’”.

Another case of raw stupidity was Gibson sending Trump a cease and desist for his fucking laming Trump Guitar. Which is a cheap bolt-on with a Les Paul body shape. Gibson sue everyone about this. The comments were full of “Gibson goes woke”… followed by, “you guys know about Gibson’s CEO right?” 😭

Look up that guitar it’s hilarious

'Woke' is a term that represents the end of any widespread agreements on the basic idea that equality matters in some senses and context, and that diversity is worth accounting for. I have never personally heard someone claim 'wokeness' for themselves.

Obviously, accounting for the circumstances and histories of one's own group and its power relations to others should be basic.

The conversion of that type of humanist care into a byword for selfishness and disregard is crap.
