Was this a used mic when you got it? Maybe it kept coming loose for the previous owner and they put a bunch of threadlocker on it or something.

Yeah it's baffling to me. I lent it to me daughter while she was doing a course for a while but she says nothing was spilt on it, no bad drops etc.

That's what I was thinking too. It still works, but the rattle is unsettling.

No, bought brand new quite a few years ago. At this point I'm wondering if I bought a fake because this issue with the grille seems almost absurd. I'm pretty sure it was a genuine mic though, and I got it before the proliferation of fake mics - they seem to be everywhere these days.

I have a couple of older 58s with mangled grilles that absolutely will not come off. I've been meaning to clamp them in a vise at some point but haven't ever gotten around to it.
