They were always only a cover band, devoid of any ideas of their own. And now Wingwalker.
Total shit.

Not Crap just to spite this guy. That Karp split is incredible, indie music used to have some muscle (before the dick rock albums)

I admired Fake Limbs for taking on the early Rye Coalition sound.

i always felt like On Top sounded kinda crappy but Jersey Girls (which I assume is from the same session?) sounded great. Looks like different mastering engineers. I also feel like seeing them live, their bass player had an incredibly smooth tone and it was kind of lost on On Top with much more of the typical “chicago/bob weston” sounding bass.

First time i saw them was latter-day at the Fireside, and I don't even remember if we played at that show or I just went to it, is how great they were.

The two recs andy mentioned are the ones i liked, though i haven't really dug into the older ones as much.

Shellac cover is wonderful.

Kinda agree that I wish the bass wasn't quite so Traynor-y on On Top (and it sounds more or less the same on Jersey Girls).

Looks like the first and last song were recorded a year after On Top in Studio B, the others songs either entirely or partially done during the On Top session, and I think the same version of "Stop Eating While I'm Smoking" are on both.

Without looking was it an Ampeg 8x10? I noticed that with a bunch of bands, especially if the band had any volume: very full sound live, kinda plinky plink on record.

Pretty sure it was a 70s SVT into an 8x10 when I saw them in 2002 (and looks like that's what shows up in live footage from the era). Not sure if that's what dude used at Electrical or not, but even the first two records have a pretty similar bass tone.

I love the Karp split. That Wingwalker cover is NC, and so are Rye Coalition.

Tight Bros From Way Back When did this waaay better. Wish they could have recorded with Albini.

That band was SCORCHIN'. Of that throwback meathead rock of that era (say 1998-2004 or so), they were absolutely the best.

For a band that would scan as being red-lining in irony, it didn't feel that way watching them. Our first show in Seattle a million years ago was with them and the Thermals, and my lord, the Tight Bros just scorched everyones' faces off.

Rye Coalition is a band I wish I saw live back then. Maybe would hit me differently.
