The algorithm is a pain in the balls, and I still struggle with getting videos to cut through that should be attracting far more views than they get.
If you don't want to go the custom thumbnail route (time consuming!) then just keep the title and first few lines of video description informative...make sure you drop in keywords you'd want a search to hit on. A few tags will help too, but less so than the title/description. There's "research" tabs in YouTube Studio that will let you look at trends and the like, but personally, I've never got much out of them.
Generally, far fewer people search nowadays. Most rely on suggestions and "up next" stuff. That makes getting started a bit of a drag. Beg friends for subs! Drop links/videos in appropriate threads (or start your own) at places like *grak* The GearPage!...I'm not proud...I've gone there.
