A sort of reluctant not crap?
Oh NC from me. Steve could have some baffling wtf music opinions at times, and wasn’t afraid to blurt them out in front of the band’s biggest supporter/mutual friend. I get not being super into them but “terrible”?
when was that interview.

steve always mentioned Rites of Spring as being one of the few good “emo hardcore bands” during our many discussions on the topic, listening to sunny day real estate in my basement. i mean. that reads like a joke, but it is true.

If you said Fugazi, I'd probably see your point, but SDRE didn't break til after Kurt off'd himself. They had the excellent singer, cute guy(s), twin guitar, moody/dynamic market cornered. Husker Du had been broken up for like a decade! I think SDRE's first two albums and the Frog Queen departure are all solid, but maybe mumble-shout isn't your thing.

Rites of Spring/One Last Wish are far and away my favorite things Dischord put out in the 80's. I used to think Guy had the most original "approach" of the emo singers, but now all I hear is HR from Bad Brains. Funny, that, but definitely Not Crap.

I'll assume you've seen this, and just be pleased if you haven't. I was in my first year of college, discovering new music that I hadn't ever considered, working next to a record store and just trying to filter everything to see what I liked. I remember watching this if not live, then on VHS because my dorm roomie recorded 120 minutes - we are closest friends to this day. He's who I came to see last year and stayed with for silkweek.

ANYWAY, we were both just floored by this performance - him as our soon to be drummer and me as guitar player who had to play bass in our band.

The record never did much for me, and on subsequent listens there's probably something there, I just don't ID with it. But as I said, if I'd seen this performance in person....man. I'd be a fan for life.
