Well, as stated in a post above, they almost were the Monkees. Also, "Do You Believe In Magic" and "Daydream" absolutely could be subbed into any Monkees set list and nobody would notice. So much that I understand why my friend clumps them together. I see a lot of parallels musically, especially from Mike Nesmith, who would have fit in well as a spoonfull. But go on being a grump about it. Next time I'll make the 4th thunderdome to figure out what The Fall song was third best.

You want more Monkees? Just listen to Neil Diamond, he wrote a lot of their songs....if that's not good enough you've got The Archies. Sugar, sugar is a jam. The Lovin' Spoonful is legit Americana band, and anticipated psychedelia with stuff like Summer in the City, as well as Country Rock with Nashville Cats. They just didn't survive in the new Hippie era. They were all good musicians and went on to play with everybody from CSN to Kris Kristofferson after folding. John Sebastian even wrote the theme to Welcome Back Kotter. The Monkees on the other hand were a joke that wound up having legs, and they did some legit cool things.

You gotta admit, writing the theme song to Welcome Back Kotter is a very Monkees thing to do.

So were the Sex Pistols and Bow Wow Wow. Hell, what was Motown except the music industry as a production line? I love cartoon music. Monkees NOT CRAP

Lovin' Spoonful is a favorite of a "plants should be native" type naturalist friend of mine. They are good musicians and their music reminds me of him, which is an upside. They didn't have the charisma to be the Monkees though. Could you imagine Hendrix touring with the Lovin' Spoonful? Seems beneath him, like it loses the cultural cache that "blew the Monkees offstage every night" has attached to it. Ah well, Not Crap to them too.

They are kind of similar bands, I suppose. Both good.
Monkees win b/c it's just a bit more winning at its poppiest and far as I know Lovin' Spoonful never did anything remotely in the league of "Circle Sky."

1. I got a bunch of my Dad's vinyl, one of them is a Monkees Greatest Hits record. But it doesn't have 'Valerie' on it!

In typical 60’s fashion it’s pulled from lyrics to a blues song …..this one happens to be about about the winning charm of black ladies.
