Phil Collins

Wow... A thread about Phil Collins, and no one mentions his great work with Brand-X? I don't even want to get into early Genesis, because for most people, there is no such thing -- their first album was "Genesis". The vast majority of this band's work was excellent, but everyone wants to focus on their MTV fodder... So be it. Brand-X never got on MTV, so they're a good example. They can't be obscured by any commercial success.

Anyway, if anyone doubts the completely sick drumming talent of Phil Collins, check out a Brand-X album like "Morroccan Roll" or "Masques". Sure, fusion is not everyone's cup of tea. Music genres aside, Phil Collins is an excellent drummer.

I like his vocals a lot too. He has a great voice, whether he sings in Sanskrit or English. If anyone bothers to check out a Genesis album from 76-80, you'll find he's not too far off from Gabriel, but there's more angst to Collin's voice. Around 80-81, Collins became American and Genesis incorporated R&B and American influences, and started to become really bad. Bad enough to sell a lot of records!

Phil Collins is a great guy. He didn't divorce his wife by fax. He nearly quit Genesis to move to Canada and sort out his failing marriage. Enough lies about the guy. Enough bad jokes on bad TV spinoff sitcoms about how terrible it is to have relations with this guy. He simply doesn't deserve this much trashing.

The guy sits in with The Musical Box (the band) and play drums on The Musical Box (the song). Pretty cool guy, despite his awful solo career.

Phil doesn't play on Masques.

But I do like that one.

My fave Brand X w/Phil - Unorthodox Behaviour. My gawd, the man IS SICK.

Brand X - Prog without the Faries and Gnomes. All playing, no singing.

I would have to say, however, that here in the 21st century, Phil Collins really bums me out. He's Barry Manilow to me.

Wait, did you just say your name is Phil Collins?

Dude...

EDIT: Or I mean "did you say that way back in the day"? When Phil Collins still had hair? When he still had a sort of "geezerish" air about him?

I don't care about great work he has done with aboriginal peoples either.
That in no way can erase "in your eyes".

Wait a minute. Are you implying/outright stating that "In Your Eyes" is NOT a good song? Come on! Have you no feelings? That song is beautiful. I don't care who disagrees.

I'm not just basing this on Say Anything, either. Just mostly.

I didn't know that... My copy doesn't include who played what... Just songwriting credits, and a photo that looks like Phil Collins in a pile of vegetation... Oh yes... Chuck Bergi. Had to look it up online, cuz the CD doesn't even mention that...

Weird... I thought he didn't bail on Brand-X until "Do They Hurt?" in 1980, when he went to Sweden to record Abacab in Abba's studio. He only played on a couple songs on that one. Noddy goes to Sweden...

I guess he took a one album hiatus after Moroccan Roll.

There's a few songs with vocals... The one in Sanskrit (first one on Moroccan Roll) and the one with the vocoder on the 80's one (can't remember it offhand, but it's post-Collins). Best vocals I've heard in fusion.

I actually have hope for Phil in the 21st century... Sitting in with the Musical Box is encouraging. Rumors of an original Genesis line-up reunion also pique my interest. Heck, I'd pay $85 to see Genesis, and sit through "Moma" if they even played just a few classics...

He said it, but it was like 2 years ago.

It still rocks my mind 2 years later.

Yes I am indeed called Phil Collins in real life
and 2 years later it is still that way I have been thinking of changing my name by deed poll to perhaps Elton Jon or similar.
