Ryland,

I am now convinced, not having been able to see you live or listen to your musics, that you are in fact a pretentious piece of shit. Go die in a fire or something.

What do you mean "...insults that have nothing to do with the music." Are you talking about the actual notes? Sure. Music and musicians and performance is so much more than the "music" per se. If you carried yourself in a pretentious way (and I stress IF. I haven't seen or heard you perform), then the criticisms are absolutely justified. It's like this story I heard about this french mathmatician. He found the answer to this super hard math problem. Worlds hardest. But he was a total cock when he told all his math friends, so they ignored him and acted like he didn't solve the math problem. This sentiment has been discussed and expressed on this forum much better than I can do.

Of course hard work has something to do with it. So does luck. It's naive to think otherwise. I know dozens of musicians who make wonderful music and work very very hard and are in no way lazy who can't tour the country for a number of other reasons. Really though, I think you missed the point of Faiz's post. It wasn't to say that your entire musical career is based on luck. If you've looked around this board and especially this specific forum, people aren't always polite about the topic of conversation. Sometimes the topic may find themselves personally offended. Suck it up. It's the same thing as if we talked about how stupid Bono looks in his sun glasses. By putting yourself in the public (playing music live for strangers) you are exposing yourself to criticism, whether or not you think it is justified is really beside the point.

You say that you genuinely care about your music. So do 95% of the people who post here. Most all of us are musicians and most none of us are doing it for any other reason than we care about it.

It seems a little arrogant to me to distinguish yourself by being one that cares about your music.

That's the thing about alot of these K related or no... maybe Kill Rock Stars, they'll have super good shit and then this Ryland shit, they signed that chick from 4 non blondes... Ryland really reinforces the theory/belief (if you are even sort of into it) of reincarnation Ryland has like 348 more lives to go, at least, and that's being totally positive maybe just some really hard jail time(Jail time will exponentially cut your sentence down Ryland so it's something to think about.) Do somethin crazy and not self referentially ponytail! Ultimately we all breathe the same air it's just that your's came from Dukakis.

Hi Faiz,

I responded to her post not because she didn't like the music, but rather that she was spitting out personal insults that really have nothing to do with the music. However, now I realize she is just manic-depressive and I should have just ignored her. I genuinely care about the music I put out (more than any person should), and I take it personally when anyone insults me and just blatantly lies. Oh well, no big deal.

I have taken the time to highlight the "blatant lies" in your paragraph, petty as it seems. Music is personal. That was the point I was making and I feel that it was clear in both Elisha (a dude) and my posts. Bullshit live show often equals thinking the music is bullshit in these parts, Which is why flying off the handle and flinging peurile insults at Elisha puts you in the same category of people you're speaking against.

You seem to be missing the point.

Also, with regard to your little rant:
I don't need you or anyone to tell me I'm lucky. I've worked incredibly hard for everything I've done.

The "sense of entitlement" that is running through this comment means you do need someone to remind you that you're lucky. I've worked with many brilliant, hardworking bands who don't have label support or a publicity agent, and their music is great, some shows they win, some they lose. I've also worked with bands who have these rock amenities (label/pr) and sometimes they win and sometimes they lose. It often has little to do with how much work you put in. Hard work and longevity only increase the chances that someone will take note of what you've been doing, it's not a guarantee.

The reason bands don't tour and people don't listen to their music is because it's bad and they are lazy - not because they aren't lucky.

By your logic, Usher is great and Jandek is bad and lazy. Way to think it through.

Tour around the country for a few months listening to music and you'll realize that good music is not something that is easily found...and good music combined with someone that actually works hard (and is also willing to sacrifice every luxury for what they love) is almost non-existent.

I have toured around this country (and other countries) and have played with my share of bad and great bands. I've also played shows with great bands who were bad people and bad bands that were great people.

In this last part, aside from saying what I've already said what is your point?

best,

Faiz
