15The Wipers were really the first great punk band from the Pacific Northwest (not counting the Sonics), and were highly influential to a small group of people up there who went on and did a lot of big things.
In other words: There probably wouldn't have been a Sub Pop or K Records without the Wipers.
Despite Greg Sage making a lot of terrible music, and being a creepy chickenhawk who hovered around my old circle of friends in Tempe, AZ in the early 90's.....

Now whenever I listen to the Wipers, I picture pale, gawking Greg Sage peering at some skinny hipster boys with a frightening, stoic countenance.
What I'm saying is: thank you very much for this information, Angus.

18I only have Is This Real so if any of you wants to burn and send me another of their cds I would be most appreciative.
Band: Wipers
19Essential:
Is This Real
Youth of America
Over the Edge
Romeo (45)
Wipers (live cassette)
The rest is littered with awesome guitar and dreadful indulgence, but their first seven or eight years were incredible. Mind boggling meld of Link Wray, Leather Nun, the Damned, the Stooges, alien abduction paranoia, societal dread and Neil Young.

20Greg Sage is an amazing guitarist, that much is clear, but let's not forget what an outstanding singer he is.
I mean, my God, I don't know if it's how he records his vocals or what but that guy is fucking amazing (see "The Lonely One" for the best example). There's something very classic and old-fashioned about his delivery, yet it still has a great punky sneer to it. Very anthemic.
