I bought a copy of A Year And A Half... last night, and have watched it three times since. It doesn't make me laugh, as much as it makes me almost violently uncomfortable -- not unlike hearing Big Moe's City of Syrup (Wrecked, Chopped, and Screwed, of course) forty times over the course of a weekend.

My favorite part has to be Bob Rock's only (apparent) lucid moment: while listening to some drum tracks, Lars enthuses, "Bonham!". Rock replies, "Yeah, Jason Bonham."

i likewise picked it up over last weekend and it was awesome. any other chicago people looking for it - i got it at reckless on milwaukee. they had both the dvd and vhs. i picked up the dvd. vhs was like 12.99 i think.

apart from all the hilarity - it looked like they were tracking to 2" - and then transfering to, what a digital tape 24 track? what was that a studer something er other?

what a bunch of dorks. i also loved lars explanation of the recording process and wacthing bob rock explain the mastering to the band - you can tell they didnt really fully understand what the hell was going on.

fuck the osbournes. i want a show about lars' everyday life. him driving his porsche like a tough guy - total napolean complex on that guy.

No. I think that was a Sony 3324 1/2" digital machine.

That video is great. They should have called it a year and a half of not good! I'm sure they spent another year and a half making this latest shit stack. Hey no wonder they need to sue the kids at napster. to pay for this kind of shit!

Lest anyone get the wrong impression, XTC are more like Fugazi and nothing like Metallica in the efficiency of their recording practices (nice one Steve). Andy puts his soul into every take, Lars... well, he does too. Say no more.

My girlfriend bought me the Metallica DVD for me last week, and it was definitely one of the funniest films I've ever experienced.

I think my favourite moments surrounded the guitar solo developments - possibly the most I've laughed in months ("you haven't done your guitar solo homework, have you?").

Two additional things came to mind:

1. Bob Rock looks and sounds incredibly like Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins from Spinal Tap) - a comparison which simply cannot be coincidental, can it?

2. Nine months of recording in total. Nine fucking months. Seriously? NINE months...of THAT?

the smashing pumpkins took a camera into the studio when they were rehearsing songs for mellon collie awhile before it came out. the video was stolen and eventually circulated with the title "666"

the quality is terrible, it's mostly billy telling everyone what to do, and he's wearing an atrocious winter sweater with a dear on it.

it's not out on dvd but i could hook you up with the vcd if you so desire.

Although it's not easy to watch sometimes the Metallica vid is my one of my favorites. I'm surprised that no one mentioned This Is Spinal Tap (even though it isn't 'real' and the studio footage is scanty) I think the 5 minute studio scene is classic. There are plenty of other things I enjoy (guilt-ily) like 'Making The Band 2' with P'Diddy's group and their in-studio footage. I'm surprised VH1 hasn't caught on more with the recording side of music. You'll see 'Making The Video' but what about 'Making The Album'? There's my million-dollar idea for someone else to exploit :)

Snippets of favorite in-studio moments (off the top of my head):
Mr. Show with Ronnie Dobbs, Saturday Night Live with Christopher Walken (as Producer Bruce Dickenson--we need more cowbell), the VH1 cable made movie about Def Leppard, and the Beach Boys ABC made for TV movie.

My favorite moment from Metallica’s video when Lars can’t play ‘percussive’ instruments splayed out on a table. He hits things like they're going to bite him back.
