I've not yet really delved into a lot of his stuff, but what I have heard has made me a huge fan of his. His ear for production is really unprecedented, IMHO. It's arguable that he's fucked up some records a bit w/ the orchestration, but overall he's great. I must humbly admit that a great deal of my appreciation for Wilco as of late is due to O'Rourke.

It was nice to see his work used in the film Love Liza. It has music spread out from Eureka and a few of the EP's.

The music they use in Love Liza is also fantastic, there is some unreleased stuff on that...

I really like this one record he was behind by Steven Prina... Although its very strange and well, real cutesie.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I didn't really see the need to start a new one.

I have Jim's Drag City stuff and I REALLY, intensely love it. He's been working in different genres for like 20 years now though, could anybody give me good introductions to most of the different styles he's worked in? (if that's even possible)

Among his non-song stuff (which indie-rockers probably do consider CRAP) I like..

* Remove the Need - somewhat ambient tabletop guitar improv. droney

* the 2 discs with White Out - in a free jazz vein with this group who are comprised of an analog synth player and a drummer.

There's also the musique concrete stuff within Brise Glace, his CD Terminal Pharmacy, and the 3" CD Rules of Reduction. With these he's utilizing those editing skills that he uses within his pop songs, but in a more extreme manner.

It's as if in Gastr Del Sol the technique was to draw attention to the jarring juxtapositions and edited arrangements, whereas in his solo Drag City albums he's using those same techniques but uses sleight-of-hand to slip the tricks in without making it too obvious.

.. and the lyrics on Insignificance are great!

Thirded/fourthed on I'm happy & I'm singing... I really love that album..I've just got hold of Mizu No Nai Umi (bless him) which is a 40-ish minute drone barely wavering beyond a single tone..And then there's a live version. It's great though, I've had it on at work for most of the week on repeat and yet to get bored of it. It's my christmas number one.

I used to think that was just a hoity-toity title they came up with for that piece until I was in a gas station in Kentucky somewhere on a road trip several years back. They had one of those cheezy coin-operated dispensers (over the urinals, no less) that sold little name-brand knockoff packets of cologne for fifty cents.

The offerings had names like "Our Outstanding Version of 'Calvin Klein'" or things like that. One of them was "Our Exquisite Replica of 'Eternity.'" I thought it was pretty hilarious.
