seeing willie live now is a real treat. he's always off the beat in a way that is really interesting and i think better than the way most of his songs were recorded. his playing is exceptional and the age in his voice sounds wonderful to me. the album teatro is close to what he sounds like live. it's a great record even with lanois who i detest.

red headed stranger is indeed great. and the live records from the 70s on are really good too. the song "you were always on my mind" is great. the willie/cash VH1 storytellers is great.

i have to agree with phases and stages. it's totally great, totally great and the name is appropriate. sometimes yr like, ok willie let's get this moving and just when you think it, it's like he responds with something nice. great stuff (to be repetetive). like the ending to washing the dishes. "sometimes she'll just walk away." bam.

Start with the RCA single Me And Paul. I don't know if it's on any of the comps, but it's the first "outlaw" song and it confused everybody when it was released. Tops.

I also hope he uses the same beat-to-shit guitar, even though it helped guitar dealers get too much money for trashed Martins.

Another vote for Phases & Stages as well as Red Headed Stranger.

I also like (in no particular order):

Country Willie (these are all the hits that he wrote way back that made other people famous) (ie. Hello Walls [you've gotta hear the talking pedal steel])

Willie Nelson sings Kris Kristofferson (I love this album because I've been hearing it my whole life.)

Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash Storytellers (when I found out that this was out there, I immediately went and bought it, listened to it for about a week straight, if only for Ghost Riders in the Sky :) )

Oh, and not that anyone cares, but my favorte songs to play with my family when we have the occasional hoe-down are Night Life, Funny How Time Slips Away, and Crazy. They are all really, really excellent songs.

PS: There's some really great songs on [i]Greatest Hits (and some that will be). For example: If You Could Touch Her at All, Whisky River, Blue Eyes Cryin' In the Rain.

There is a little hole-in-the-wall bar here in Houston that I frequent, and this CD gets played ALL THE TIME.

I swear to god, everytime "Whisky River" comes on people start "hootin' an' hollerin'" and I'm just waiting for an all-out brawl.

I love Willie, I love Lone Star and I love Texas.

Crazy: The Demo Sessions is really good -- straightforward solo takes from the sixties.

And I like Teatro a lot, his '98 record with Daniel Lanois (and Emmylou Harris, etc.).

And Stardust -- which, with its mix of country and heartbreak lounge and The Great American Songbook, is kind of the best Tom Waits record ever.

You know I was going to mention Shotgun Willie as well, but although I have it, I haven't heard it enough times to make sure it's that good.

I like Teatro too. I used to have it but left it at my parents place, so I haven't heard it in a while. I don't usually care for Daniel Lanois's productions though.
