hhhmmm...

Over one year later and I'd have to say I find this band decidedly less "stunning" than I asserted in my original post. I think I now recognize a lot of conservative-borderline-anachronistic things about their music and its brand of southern gothicism (if that is what you would call it), which struck me as something "new" when I first heard it. I can also appreciate the post that said that they have soul nor swagger.

I'm not going to vote CRAP any time soon, but I hardly ever feel like playing their records anymore.

'60s Airline Res-o-Glass, or possibly the Eastwood copy of them.

I like half of their songs, but they always struck me as somewhat contrived

Je pense que ce n´est pas moi le Matthias qui tu connais. Mais c´est possible que je viens au concert de Yo La Tengo. C´est pas loin de Sarrebruck.

It is the real deal; the Airline, not the Eastwood copy. I have seen thatmyrareguitars.com carries the Eastwood guitars and they seem very affordable. Anyone ever play them? I kinda have my eye on one of those Club basses... something like an old Kay or Hofner:

I like Calexico a lot and almost even more than them is their FANTASTICALLY BEAUTIFUL YOUNG FEMALE CROWD. I was lucky enough to be on a tour with them and I swear with out exception, every city we played had the same type of crowd. Leave it to a band of handsome guys to draw a very very hot female crowd. It was a pleasure to sit at the merch table and watch the crowd each night. Now how often can you say THAT?!

(plus, they are super great, nice guys)

I'm sure Joey got it at the Chicago Store in downtown Tucson.

The Chicago Store has been around a long time (it gets a mention in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore").

That place used to be (and maybe still is) littered with nutty musical instruments.

I heard that there was (and maybe still is) a private upstairs area where all the really good stuff is. Joey would certainly have access to it.

Seconded. I met a friend at the show. She really has a crush on John Convertino and almost fainted when she got to shake Joey Burns´ hand. She is sexy looking too.

I kind of envy Calexico now. They have got everything i ever wanted when i started to play the guitar. :(

I think the stories are exaggerated about the upstairs... or the term could should be used as in "there could be great stuff up there". I have tricked my way up there a couple of times ("hey, there is the Kuston Kraft bass I was looking for... can I go up and see?") and it is filled and I mean FILLED to the ceiling with stacks of old plywood cellos and bad condition drums of every size, shape, finish, make all stacked up in total disorder. There probably are many great old complete sets up there but it would take you three weeks to find all the pieces.... There is a lot of marching band gear up there too... most of the stuff seems in disrepair or even water damaged. There are some old basses and guitars but mostly cheap old 60's copy instruments in poor condition... mostly 'wall hangers'. It makes the downstairs seem orderly if you can imagine that!

Wades in Milwaukee carries Eastwoods, I have played almost every model they seem to be really well made, and I drool over them each time I go buy strings...

Anything good that comes through there is going to be set aside for Howe, Joey, and the gang. They aren't sifting through anything.

I hear you.

-They love the music they write and perform (whether we do or not)
-They have a big national and international fan base
-Lots of beautiful people all over the world want to sleep with them
-They are small and slender enough so that most of the vintage Pendleton shirts they come across actually fit them

These guys have the world by the short hairs.

John C. has a family, so I guess it's Joey that I envy the most.
