well, i don't think it's just the college kids. i think while there's a lot of disagreement over terms (just like in rock -- no kidding! who's punk and who's not?) there's a widespread notion among lots of people who may or may not have ever been in college that
hip hop is the genre
rap is the vocal style of the genre
sort of like
metal is the genre
chugging is the rhythm guitar style of the genre
shredding is the lead guitar style of the genre
therefore
hip hop is made by rappers and producers and djs, and if you want to extend beyond music, the "four elements of hip hop" also include breakdancers and graffiti artists.
rap was a more popular term in the past because the genre was new so it was like "oh you know, the music with the rapping", sort of like how every rapper had MC in their name, and now they don't, but they still refer to each other as MCs. why? because they all still consider themselves MCs, and refer to rapping as MCing, so at this point in time they don't need to state in their names.

Your right in theory, And I agree with you.
But words Hip/hop and rap are increasing used as a to divide the two groups... "us" and "them". Its become all about ideology

I like some of the old school stuff. Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash, even some of the early gangsta material like the Ghetto Boys and Ice-T.
The newer material just leaves me cold. It just seems so cliche. There's probably newer material out there I would like, but I really don't feel like searching it out.
I don't listen to newer punk rock either, for pretty much the same reason.
I will vote not crap for the older stuff I do like. I won't dismiss a whole genre, unless of course you're talking about Emo.

Deltron 3030 and Dr. Octagon are two interesting albums you might like.

For the record, I went back and tried to recreate my mindset when I made that comment and I'm dumbfounded. I was pissed of at BClark for some reason and just started saying dumb shit. The "I have black friends" comment that preceeded it was meant as irony. Most stupid racist statements seem to start with that disclaimer. The homosexual/reggae comment was the result of bad seafood if I remember correctly and I apologize to anyone whose feelings might have been hurt. Heh.
