I agree.

Also, there is a big difference between finding someone sexy or attractive (natural) and leering or making lewd comments/lame jokes (unnecessary).

I would hope that most everyone here would understand that.

There are nearly no relations that don't contain a percentage of 'objectification', and expecting it to be absent can plateau something promising out pretty quickly. Trusting someone to respect you while they are objectifying you seems a little more effective...maybe? Both ways?

I don't know.

Yes, but that's in a personal relationship. (My only problem with this in my personal life is when it doesn't happen.) Whether spoken or not, it's mutually agreed upon and consented to (um, hopefully).

Objectification on an impersonal level is different. There is no implied or explicit consent and, in that sense, no possibility for respect.

I might resent the fact that I'm seen as incapable of keeping my tendencies towards 'objectification' seperate from my capabilities for developing respectful relations on a less personal level.

Phew.

I don't see any reason to self-censor based upon other people's sensitivities. In fact, this goes against what I see as respectable social honesty. If I am naturally inclined to say things offensive to others, I should be judged as offensive by those others...including other 'internet strangers' such as the ones here.

So at whose expense do we get to make jokes? Only ourselves? Because ALL humor is at someone's expense. Unless, that is, we all have to behave as if this is Nickelodeon.

Intent is the crux, and I don't think anyone on this thread has intended malice towards anyone. I don't get that at all. (Here is where the PC police respond with po-mo arguments about subconscious intent and aggregate effect of subtext.)

If one is offended and doesn't choose to keep it to oneself, then expect people who don't agree with the command "shut up" to respond. It's really quite simple.

One thing people are discussing is the idea of objectification, which was what I was addressing in my previous two posts.

The other thing is the current trend toward lesbian jokes. I am not highly offended by the lesbian jokes, but I do find them incredibly dull.

I am more interested in the discussion as it involves issues of objectification.
