In response to the person that said neither Dylan nor Neil could "sing," I have to say that while I really enjoy both of their voices, Neil really did learn how to sing...and boy howdy does Neil have a beautiful and haunting voice.
Dylan had more "perfect" albums perhaps...but Neil's got On The Beach! Tonight's The Night! Zuma!
And to a lesser extent: Rust Never Sleeps! Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. After the Gold Rush.
I love them both...but I really do prefer Neil now by a sizeable margin.

Neil. Bob wrote some great songs that were done better by other people (ex: All Along The Watchtower), and I loved his version of "Lay, Lady, Lay" (as the 2nd grade teacher at Standish Elementary found out when I brought the record in to play at "music time" in 1969), but Neil does his own songs consistently better.

i saw a dylan show and he was fucking terrible. sounded like someone doing an impression of someone doing an impression of bob dylan. cack. absolute undiluted cack. made no effort and charged a testicle and kidney for a ticket. when you say this to dylan fans they say 'oh thats just the way he is, its pot luck when you go to see him'. i realise that anyone can have a bad day but when an artist makes absolutely no effort after people have paid to see him he can fuck off.
neil young on the other hand i fucking love. the records he made with crazy horse are so fucking good. i can't even describe how much enjoyment i get out of listening to them. great great stuff.

Wouldn't it be fairer to judge Dylan's
records against Neil's rather than juxtapopsing one man's recorded output to one live performance? Both men have produced staggeringly excellent bodies of work. As far as shows go, I've seen Dylan give one poor performance in eight or ten, and some of them have been outstanding. All three Neil shows I've seen were great, but the good people of Louisville once rioted when Neil left the stage after only a few songs because he was "sick."

Neil Young.
The worst show I ever went to was Bob Dylan in 1989. He was shit.

What was the Greendale tour like? I heard the live action stage play was comparable to "bad high school theater."
I like Neil better, but he certainly has done a lot more cheez-o-riffic crap over the years...somebody on this board said that both nailed a lot of hippies but that only Neil actually WAS a hippie...

if neil's a hippie, he tries hard not to show it.
"the hippies all go there because they want to be seen."
"the hippies tore down everything that he was fighting for."
he's a biker. beyond that, it's very hard to say.

Big Neil, the 1969-74 song book is just so good.
