Cocorosie: What s the big deal?

If its any consolation to you, I went and listened.

It didn't inspire abject hatred in me, it just isn't my thing.

I didn't enjoy the vocals and the song went on a good deal longer than it needed to.

It sounds like something I've heard before but I can't put my finger on it.

I guess there are worse things to be obsessed with.

I can only give it a meh....

Go ahead shit all over it, just give a reason you are doing so aside from 'Oh I'm supposed to think they suck, everyone thinks they suck...so they suck'

I feel you are owed this, so here goes.

Their music contains no urgency, sense of conflict, sense of actual emotion of enlightened observation. It sounds as though it is made by people who had some spare time between their social obligations and shopping trips. The use of a dated hip-hop "instrument" in the form of beat-boxing in order to add a hipness or dangerous aspect to the composition is especially infuriating. The keyboard melody on its own is not terrible--save for the unnecessary "Happy Birthday" intro--but the additional instrumentation reeks of over-achievement. The music sounds like people trying really hard to make attractive and cute music. And the baby voice. For the love of fucking god how I loathe that baby voice. Its contrivance leeches into whatever pores of genuine character the music might possess and just sours the entire effort.

I hope you do not take this personally, but I just truly cannot find anything worthwhile about them.

Jon

"liike memowies ob powno and tea-stains and to-back-ow-ow."

There is not a single element of this music, the subject matter, the delivery or the personae in evidence that doesn't incite the "shit on this" impulse in me, and (as noted) I am not a regular shit-on-it guy. This is utterly phony, self-conscious, artless (though "arty") and affected. It is exactly, precisely what punk rock was trying to destroy. I am 100 percent comfortable classifying this music and everything that spawns it as my enemies.

i like a few cocorosie songs here and there. i think they have an interesting dynamic with hip-hop and pop elements dotted around and they seem more interested in making full albums instead of a pair of brainless songs.

that being said, i really dislike sierra's vocal performances overall -- she's the one who puts smears "opera" all over the tracks (omg she studied opera in paris she must be good omg omg omg). its like throwing in a hurdle or two for someone on the 400m dash. bianca is the one with the little-girl-voice. i like her sound and her hip-hop rooted aesthetic, reminds me of that icelandic band mum. i wish she was in a different band. there's a clash and throwing on patches of weird over songs... it doesn't fix them. weird for weird's sake... yeh, they do that. really fake.

Not a fan of Coco Rosie here either. I have a fantasy of Whitehouse doing a whole concept record on how much they hate the Coke Rosies.

Could you possibly expand on this? I'm genuinely interested in your view on what punk rock was trying to destroy. I have my own ideas, but I'll bet that your version is a hell of lot more articulate than mine.

This is a joke right? Are we supposed to take "Animals" seriously?

It's the only way I'll be able to achieve the sound I hear in my head.
