My impression was that The Police were never "critics' darlings," never had any "cred" vested in them, are generally skipped over in discussions over "'77-'84 rock," and were always a popular target of derision for Melody Maker and the NME. I was a toddler back then, but my guess is they were seen as a "shit band with a couple of huge records" not unlike Nickelback.

So it's cool.

Not saying you'll ever like it, but it took me YEARS to get this whole record.

The Song is Over, still bad.

And I always loved the first two and last two songs.

But the rest of it took about twenty years.

Sgt Pepper's is the first thing that comes to mind. I actively dislike most of it.

Fuck I never thought someone would choose Who's Next over Sgt. Pepper's(Ok, Tim, I know that's not what you said, but just for argument's sake I'm skewing reality for a sec.) Being a huge fan of both, I have to examine this more closely:

Sgt. Peppers vs. Baba O' Riley - Beatles
With A Little Help.. vs. Bargain - Beatles
Lucy in the Sky vs. Love Ain't for Keeping - Beatles
Getting Better vs. My Wife - Beatles
Fixing a Hole vs. The Song is Over - Who
She's Leaving Home vs. Getting in Tune - Beatles
Benefit of Mr. Kite! vs. Going Mobile - Beatles
Within You Without You vs. Behind Blue Eyes - Beatles
When I'm Si
xty-Four
Lovely Rita
Good Morning Good Morning
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise)
A Day in
the Life

ok ok fuck this. obviously IMO, sgt. peppers blows who's next out of the fucking water. i mean, fuck, i love who's next. but sgt. peppers feels so effortless where who's next treads water. that's just me. and i love the who more than the beatles.

I now kinda think the "1979" might be the only good song they've ever written. I used to listen to that album quite a bit in my grade school days, but it didn't age well with me.

this comment was posted on a youtube video.

An abhorrent thought. Beautiful album, through and through.

The Steve Miller Band, however, should choke on its own tiny dick.

I think it's a stretch to call Steve Miller "critically lauded."

Whoever put up Harvest - right fucking on. And I've been listening to nothing but Neil Young over the past couple days. No one does it better for me right now.

Neil is a genius.

But Harvest is, pretty much, a bland, overrated "down-home" turd. If this is your idea of country music, Neil, you should realize that country music usually has balls and isn't self-righteous. Admittedly some songs fit that description: "The Needle and the Damage Done" - beautiful, brilliant song, "A Man Needs A Maid" - bizarre, but great and pretty funny too, "Heart of Gold"...enh, alright, big hit single, catchy, whatever. And for some reason, I dig "Out on the Weekend," and I don't know why. Everything else on the album blows the dong to varying degrees. "There's A World"? "Alabama"? "Words"? "Old Man"? Fuck that shit to hell. Those are fucking awful songs.

Overrated record? Cream - Disraeli Gears. This is not psychedelia. This is, almost without exception, standard '66 britblues with fruity lyrics and singing. "Sunshine of Your Love" and "Tales of Brave Ulysses" are good songs. Everything else is either average, boring, or awful.

Oh, and if anyone hasn't mentioned it yet, U2 are the most overrated band ever in the history of rocque moosic - and I actually like some of their songs...

I've given this a bit more thought. The albums/artists that do nothing have very little in common, aside from some obvious vocal nuances. Which is a relief in itself.

- Bob Dylan: I think the vocals play a big part in my dislike of all his recordings. His musical style does nothing for me. Listening to Dylan is like listening to dead air.

- The Talking Heads: I cringe whenever I hear anything by the Talking Heads. I can't pinpoint why that is.

- Dinosaur Jr. (with the exception of You're Living All Over Me) : No memorable riffs, lyrics, or songs, really. Doesn't grab me.

- Husker Du: I really want to like these guys, since their albums sound, upon intial listens, like something I would enjoy. But something about them strikes me as sophmoric. After two years, nothing by them has clicked.

- Anything by John Lydon: I just find the guy annoying both as a musician and as a personality.

- Black Sabbath: See Talking Heads, John Lydon.

- Crass: Their records are pulverizingly annoying.

- Black Flag, Ramones, Dead Kennedys: See Crass.
