pansonic - fart-inducing bass squelches opening for Trans Am's bill 3 years ago. Seriously - uncontrollable farts.
Quintron - Dressed up as his own roadie ... Said guitar tech on the back of his coveralls. Then the lights came up and he turned around whipped off the long-har wig and out of the coverralls into his rhine-stoned suit and clean cut coif. Sat down and treated us right.

Seeing the Residents (on the tour before that, for the DVD) was definitely one of the strangest things I've seen. To this day, I have no idea if they were actually playing or not.
Yup Choppy and I went and saw them together, it was really surreal, just like it should be...
and honestly who cares if they were playing or not.

Quintron yes, Captured by Robots yes,
There's a band in the area called The Cartridge Family, and it was my misfortune to see them play live once. They quite literally stank up the entire bar. The band itself has something like 40 members, although not all of them were at this show. Of those who were, maybe 6 were on stage playing instruments, and the rest had one of those inflatable jumping deals, only without the walls or roof, and they were jumping on and off it, and on and off the tables, and a few of them were only in their underwear, and some of them were throwing handfuls of flour at each other, and into the audience, and they were wrestling each other, and yelling and howling, and, as I mentioned, literally stinking. The antics were an effective distraction from the music. When I was able to concentrate, the music was pretty lousy. The energy was great! The "band" was terrible.

Eugene Chadbourne played a show at Hampshire College around 1990 that really sticks out. It was outside of the Art Barn, not even the tavern or the dining hall. Lots of weirdness and political commentary, homemade instruments that quacked and honked. Utterly hilarious and fun, unlike a lot of the bands already mentioned. I wish I remembered more details.
Ariel Pink opening for Animal Collective was fuuuucked up in an "I can't play" kind of way. I've already talked about this in the "worst band ever" thread.
Cat Power, for sheer uncomfortableness.
The Robot Ate Me...severe art damage, but in a good way. Audience participation...storytime type stuff. And a song made up on the spot called "New Orleans Water Slide." I think he might be the new Eugene Chadbourne.
Some guy that John Zorn played with at the Knitting Factory in 1997. All homemade instruments, each wackier looking than the next. He just kept whipping them out of his proverbial overcoat. Even John Zorn was looking at him like he was fucking nuts. Now that's something. This was followed up by a Japanese minimalist kiddie pop outfit that was fucking creepy. They only played 15 minutes, thank goodness.
Bob Log III -- the shtick wears a little thin after you've seen him a couple of times, but the first time is unparalleled hilarity. Dude with an Evil Knievel outfit singing through a phone attached to a helmet, playing delta slide guitar to a drum machine running at about 180 BPM. If you've never seen him, go.

The reason it stank so much is because they had one kid in the band that had an allergic reaction to flour and he was sitting in a kiddie pool eating it by the handful and puking in the bathtub.
I think that this Cartridge family is a few very interesting and creative individuals surrounded by their dumbass monkey friends.

Massona at The Garage in London (2000).
And Cat Power, I don't remember exactly when it was but maybe around 1996.
She played in Lausanne (Switz.) in a tiny club, everybody was talking about Steve Shelley touring with her, so at least 70% of the audience went to the gig hoping to see him drumming and the venue was really packed!!!!
Too bad, Cat Power went on stage alone with her guitar. We definitely could feel a wave of disapointment through the venue when she turned up. Also for a reason we'll never know, she wasn't really happy to be here that night, something went wrong at one point and we could see she was uncomfortable being there.
Anyway, half way through her set, a big fat friend of mine loudly burped, Cat Power stopped playing, she really looked confused, she said "Cheers" and started playing again.
She suddenly cried, stood up and left the stage....we never saw her again that night.
That was definitely a weird gig.

Need New Body - strange, circluar, non-mosh pit. Banjos and beards. Home-made instruments.
The Epoxies - Rythym section who looked like they should be collecting retirement and not dressing up like the band Orgy, only with lasers on their guitars and the occasional "Jason" mask.
Verbal Abuse - Not so much weird, as awesome. Singer had obviously been a heroin addict for at least 40 years. He ran around screaming like a mad-man and the drummer was the guitarist's son.
I recently saw some band called "Mahn-Mahn" or something like that, they were very strange, but hard to describe. They all wore white painters suits. The lead singer played keyboard and sang like the cookie monster, the other 5 guys mostly sang falsetto... all the time. They had alot of strange percussion and a very badass drummer. I would jock them if i wasn't too embarressed to buy the cd.

sounds like "Man-Man." they were ok when I saw 'em.
