I dunno...they may have been a kinda Americanized, watered down Sabbath early on, but they took some good hooks from the Sabbath playbook...now they're just a plodding hick bar band.

But fuggit...

Huh?

Metallica never sounded remotely like Sabbath to me.

Black Sabbath, better band, but they could never play that shit.

I love the footage of the bass player auditions in SKoM. Hardly any of them are up for it.

Also you get the added bonus of finding out which bass player numbskulls were willing to try out for Metallica (i mean, ok, it's a good paycheck, but...). I sometimes wonder if Corrosion of Conformity saw that movie and suddenly looked over at Pepper Keenen and went "uh...dude? You, um, you happy being in the band? Everything ok?"

And then finding out that Eric Avery played in Alanis Morrissette's band. Oh, Eric Avery.

Apparently Pepper Keenen is close friends with James Hetfield and James really wanted him to audition. From what I read Keenen wasn't too keen (pun intended) on being in the movie for the exact reason you said.

The bass player audition is the best part of that movie.

Now that you mention it, i think i read that exact same thing in the book that one of the directors wrote about the movie (which, if you haven't read it, is a pretty great behind-the-scenes memoir).

And yes, totally the best part of the movie. The editing between auditions is really top-notch. (Not to mention seeing that one chick "superfan" bass player that gets to jam with the band and totally outplay half those dudes.)

That's actually where I read it. I wasn't going to admit it...but now that I have, I feel better.

The other awesome thing that is revealed in the book is that Metallica went to see Sigur Rós play and came back totally inspired. They went into the studio that night and recorded a long droning echoey sounding song. The only time this is hinted at in the movie is when they play the song for Lars dad and he tells them that it sucks.

Well, they actually have something in common with each other, i.e. James sings in a made up language as well.

Wow...that actually makes a lot of sense.

The first time I heard St. Anger I thought one of the lines was "my lifestyle determines my deathstyle"...but there is no way anyone would use that line. He must be saying the same syllables, but in his made up language.

I'm glad I could help.

Sometimes these things aren't so obvious.
