I was aware of the Merlin app but have not used it up until now.

Agree it could have been helpful. I do not recall seeing an Egyptian Goose (second photo) before and was wondering what it was. Somewhat surprised it's not a duck...

that is one handsome goose!
and i crack up every time i see a swan do that. like no matter how snobby and showy you are, sometimes you just gotta throw that ass up in the air.

we went for a little hike at St. Pat's park in South Bend this morning. the spring beauties just carpeted the woods, it was lovely.
saw a couple blue herons, and some chickadees were being very cute. one was varying it's pitch and it worked in a little dissonance for me.

the Phoebes (or maybe they're flycatchers, it's real hard to tell), are now feeding their second brood of the year. The nest is on a weather head for the ceiling fan in the half bathroom that is in our mudroom at the back of the house. last year they made 2 broods too and in the same nest. They've been working that same nest for at least 4 years now, rebuilding it as needed. That first brood this year (was 4 or 5 chicks) was so tight in the nest just before they fledged that it kinda got torn apart. It's really nothing but mud and moss and some dog hair from combing the hounds out on the back patio.
