80-90's indie nerd rock-flat affect "singing" is bad - SY, Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, Superchunk, Treepeople, Silkworm, Archers of Loaf

I don't think anyone would argue otherwise.

I think that's part of the appeal sometimes. The Pavement guy rambling at me in a voice not too different from mine is fairly relatable (to the middle-aged white guy who went to college demographic).

I haven't thought too much about it but maybe it was partially a reaction to a lot of the 'doom vibrato' singing in the '80s.

^ This is interesting. I think you could probably come up with at least 8 different archetypal singer 'types' with multiple examples. They all suggest something as a character/narrator and I'm sure there's something disagreeable about each of them, especially presented as a stereotype.

No.

They were unique.
They were dull as dishwater. Trans Europ Express has to be one of the most boring tunes committed to vinyl.

Curious why you think this.
Because it doesn't taste any better, but costs a lot more.

Have you attended one?
You couldn't pay me to attend.

I'm a fan. I didn't know much about it until one of my kids became fascinated with The Magic Flute when he was younger. It's expensive to take the family, but since my kids don't seem to care about things like playing on traveling soccer teams or going to Disneyland which suck funds from other family budgets, we can conserve elsewhere.

I won't ever say operas are crap.

Isn't Les Misérables technically an opera since there is no spoken dialogue?
It's a novel.
