This thread inspired me recently to break out their records and play them back to back. I listened to Pure, Head, Goat, Liar, Down and Shot all in a row in one afternoon. I do not own Lash or Show. I did throw in the Wheelchair Epidemic 7 " between Goat and Liar.

I won't bother commenting much on the first 3 records. They are all great in their own way. Pure is a new and exciting band searching for their sound. Head is the preview of what's to come - sickness, discomfort and incredible power. Goat is their masterpiece.

The 7 inch rocks. You know this.

Liar is good. I wasn't always sure but now I am. It is good.

Down has some pretty good songs. I was never that moved by it but it has some good songs on it that have held up. It still sounds like the Jesus Lizard but the bright flame of rock is almost out of fuel. The price tag from In Your Ear Records in Boston is still on the cover and says "Used - 4.99". I guess I didn't quite snatch it up upon release.

As for Shot...I did buy this new in 1996. I guess back then I must have liked Down enough to give Shot a chance. It is on red vinyl. That's neat.

I remember listening to Shot once, maybe twice when I bought it and I didn't care for it back then at all. I had even stopped seeing them play by this point. I thought that maybe this time, with 11 years between now and then, that this record would turn out to be not so bad.

It was not to be. Shot is so horrible, so un Jesus Lizard like, that I wish I could wash the sound of it out of my head. I will not play it again. Not even in another 11 years.

For me Down was the end of a great, great band.

I have no less than five friends who have ONLY heard Shot. I am appalled by this. They all seem to enjoy it. Are my ears tainted from having heard the keepers? Was the Jesus Lizard at least a good band when they recorded Shot? Are we being a little too hard on that album?

No. Fuck that album. Sounds like the fucking Police.

Other than casually hearing Show out and about, Shot was my first exposure to TJL. I think Thumper is still a grat song. I started seeing them right around then and they were still amazing.

After getting my feet wet and being able to discern good TJL from bad TJL, yeah Show ain't amazing. For me, It's like a Tool album; nothing great but still better than most of the crap out there.

Has anybody else gotten a copy of the "promotional tool" cd? I picked that up between Shot and Blue. What an excellent comp for them, the only thing I disliked on it was The Associate.

same old experiments, same old results. my band is fully guilty of it.

kerble, your friends band volcano though, that to me really is something truly experimental and truly powerful. all i think they're really doing is putting beautiful pop songs through a meat grinder, but it works really really well.

before shutting down shop a few weeks ago, woody's south received an unexpected patron at a Jazzus Lizard performance. legendary scratch acid and jesus lizard bassist david sims stopped by while in town visiting family and was so impressed with the jazz tribute that he offered to produce the lizards album, if and when they record one. "he thought we were taking a really interesting approach with some of the song structures," says jazzus drummer snoopy melvin, who adds that the quartet is incorporating a few scratch acid tunes into its repertoire. "one of the things he mentioned was getting the songs on a movie soundtrack so that all of us would be set."

SHOT is ok but BLUE is rather dissapointing

I'm glad you think so, too. volcano! is a great experimental band. Aaron's voice may not be for everyone, but holy hell, that band has some fantastic ideas.
