I don't understand how you people you call yourselves "literate humans" cannot appreciate such work as Peart's. His lyrics also always hit close to the heart. Each song he writes can have multiple meanings to different people, but just about every song, you can relate to.

I don't disbelieve you, and honestly I really admire your affection and enthusiasm for this band. No shit, I think it's great. You have found an abiding passion in music, and okay, it's Rush, but that matters little. You have found something.

Care to weigh-in on what any of this means?

I know you said they have multiple meanings, so just pick one. What does any of this mean in the literal sense. It sure looks like gibberish to me.

Unstable condition,
A symptom of life,
Of mental and environmental change.
atmospheric disturbance,
The feverish flux
Of human interface and interchange.

The impulse is pure;
Sometimes our circuits get shorted
By external interference.
Signals get crossed
And the balance distorted
By internal incoherence.

A tired mind become a shape shifter,
Everybody need a mood lifter,
Everybody need reverse polarity.
Everybody got mixed feelings
About the function and the form.
Everybody got to elevate from the norm.

An ounce of perception,
A pound of obscure.
Process information at half speed.
Pause, rewind, replay,
Warm memory chip,
Random sample, hold the one you need.

Leave out the fiction,
The fact is, this friction
Will only be won by persistence.
Leave out conditions,
Courageous convictions
Will drag the dream into existence.

A tired mind become a shape shifter,
Everybody need a soft filter,
Everybody need reverse polarity.
Everybody got mixed feelings
About the function and the form.
Everybody got to elevate from the norm...

Actually I think it's an (admittedly overwritten) exploration of human will vs. the limitations of flesh and societal impediments. Not the greatest song ever written, nor the most straightforward, but not gibberish.

rushfan1 wrote:Ok, first off, this is a discussion about Neil Peart's writings, is it not? This is not a discussion about how ugly the band is, or their instruments, for that matter. Besides, it's not really fair you choose pictures of them in the 1980's, when everyone had a mullet, and everyone looked like that.
Additionally, I believe that Rush is one of the best bands ever, if not the best. They are also extremely influential to a variety of bands. Their music is superb, and they're also one of the longest lasting bands around ... 30 plus years, still making music, and they've had the same members since Fly By Night, their second studio album, out of a total of 19 studio albums and 7 live albums.
Regarding Neil Peart's lyrics they are most definitely NOT crap. They are the eighth wonder of the world. I don't understand how you people you call yourselves "literate humans" cannot appreciate such work as Peart's. His lyrics also always hit close to the heart. Each song he writes can have multiple meanings to different people, but just about every song, you can relate to.

Forgot to mention this earlier. No, not everyone looked like that in the '80s. Only douchebags looked like that in the '80s.

It's about jerking off.

edited: I reread it and realized that a song about fucking would be too cool. This is simply a song about him and his knob. or just erections in general.

Ok. Here's one. It seems as though Peart is comparing the lives and problems of a human being to a machine. Just as you can rewire and reverse the polarity of a machine to make its function different, a human can take chances to "deviate from the norm."
I'll even give you another explanation. It could be interpreted as and explanation of the elements of life. For instance, say you were an intelligent being, but not human. If you were to examine a human body; how it functions, how we interact, etc, this is what you would find.

How's that, steve?

You are welcome to this set of lyrics, rushfan1. I am glad you can fathom them somehow. I cannot.

Why not? It's just exceeding complex language, but it really makes perfect sense.
