funny you mention anacrusis and voivod, marsup... they're favorites of friends of mine. i like 'em but just never got way into it. though "the unknown knows" is badass.

Soundgarden at the Spokane Arena in May 1994 on the Superunknown tour. Tad and Eleven opened up.

My mom took my best friend and I, and then fell asleep during Soundgarden's set. I guess she knew more about rock music than I did at that point.

I didn't see another real show until early 1999 when I saw Neil Young play solo at the Spokane Opera House. Now that was amazing.

Find Anarcusis doing 'I love the world' by new model army and you'll see why I dig them as well.

Soul Asylum, man...I can't even imagine.

First concert: Dave Brubeck, Jackson High School Auditorium, Jackson, MI. 1973. I had just started junior high, went with my parents. Brubeck was playing with his sons, who had long hair and a distinct hippie vibe (they were also playing in a rock band called New Heavenly Blue at the time), and did some blues rock stuff that impressed me. I had fun.

First rock show: Linda Ronstadt, Pine Knob, Detroit, MI. My brother had two tickets to see this show and his fiancee broke off their engagement two weeks before. He wanted to see the concert but couldn't get a date on short notice (especially after being off the market for several months), so he brought his dorky little brother along. I remember the wierd couple who sat next to us smoking dope throughout the show and never made a sound, and that Linda was not very interesting, but she looked really good in a Cub Scout's uniform.

First punk-related show: The Mutants, McDonnel Hall Kiva, Michigan State University, E. Lansing, MI, 1978. After hearing Elvis Costello as a college freshman, I was interested in this "new wave" stuff, and a band from Detroit was playing in the dorm next to mine, so I forked over three bucks and checked 'em out. Turns out they were the musical project of John Kordosh, one of the better writers at CREEM magazine post-Bangs, and The Mutants played a fine blend of hard rock, 60's garage stuff and proto-punk. They were also funny as hell, with tunes like "Whatever Happened To Quaaludes," "So American," "Bad Talk" ("We're not homos!"), "I Say Yeah" and lots more. I decided I liked punk rock, and though I soon discovered what I heard wasn't exactly punk rock, it was close enough that my decision proved accurate. By the way, these Mutants were no relation to the less interesting band from San Francisco. The Mutants from Detroit also put out two self-released singles that I cherish to this day.

First actual touring band punk show: Eight-A-Day For The Eighties, Jennison Fieldhouse, MSU, 1979. One day "new wave" festival headlined by the Ramones and Wreckless Eric. The Ramones were amazing, Wreckless Eric fun and charming. The Textones were OK, Caroline Mas (some woman who had been dubbed "the Female Springsteen") delivered a great set that gave me no clue of how lame her albums were, Mi-Sex were forgettable synth stuff, Gary Fabulous and the Black Slack were a less-than-interesting band from Detroit who opened, and I left before the Lloyds (who were supposed to play last to clear out the place) went on stage. The Battered Wives from Toronto were also on the bill, but opted not to play due to the presence of a gaggle of feminist protesters. Apparently the Fix and the Meatmen played a free show nearby that I missed, supposedly as some sort of protest of the corporate, University-sponsored punk show happening the same day. Oh well.

Pretty fantastic. I was lucky, and one thing I remember was that I was initially kinda mad that it didn't sound exactly like the studio recordings...then I realized how fucking awesome it was. I mean, Willie Nelson...he's still got it. His band was pretty amazing, too - his sister tinkled a mean piano, his drummer was awesome, and that harmonica player is the man.

oh yeah, i really liked that version of "i love the world" so i downloaded the original. i know i've heard tribal convictions (first song on dimension hatross, right?) and liked it.

First rock show: my parents took me to see Neil Young on the Trans tour because I liked Neil Young.

First punk rock show: My cousin Scott took me to CBGB to see the Ramones when I was 12 or so. He lied to my parents and told them he was taking me to the movies.

First show I went to by myself: I can't remember! It was probably at CBGB though. I would have been the geek calling home from the grotty payphone.

My parents/mom pretty much let me go wherever I wanted as long as I called when I got there. The one time I got all cavalier about not calling was the last. Having the doorguy at CB's yell out your name followed by "YOUR MOTHER IS ON THE PHONE AND WANTS TO KNOW WHERE YOU ARE" is the most embarrassing thing in the world.

I was at a Frank Zappa show for the Broadway The Hardway tour when I was still in my mother's womb. I was ready to come out right fucking there.

My first "concert" ever was Meat Loaf at the World Music Theater. I also saw Kansas at Drury Lane sometime around then as well. I was 6. Both shows were damn good. I still like Kansas... Fuck you.

My first "punk rock" (and I use the term loosely here) show was The Lawrence Arms at the Fireside. I almost threw up (someone threw a stink bomb in the middle of the floor) and nearly lost my glasses. Horrible shit bands Yellowcard and The Starting Line opened. They both ended up on MTV about a year later.
