I watched two directed by the Irish filmmaker Darren Thornton and co-written by his brother Colin:
- A Date for Mad Mary (2016) - love / strained friendship story about a woman fresh out of prison. Very good, balances cynicism and optimism well.
- Four Mothers (2024) - self-actualization comedy focusing on a gay YA author. Less successful than Mad Mary, but also significantly more warm-and-fuzzy.

I enjoyed this one.

Just watched Friendship. Stars a Tim Robinson. My wife and I destroyed our finger nails. You have been warned.

I've been taking advantage of Regal's Month of Masterpieces, having watched Pan's Labyrinth, Do the Right Thing, and Psycho. Still have Lawrence of Arabia (my all-time favorite) on Sunday, and tomorrow I am going to One Battle After Another in IMAX. Between all that, the September Grand Sumo, and baseball's end-of-season run-in, my screentime-to-reality ratio has been pretty altered this month.

Edit: One Battle After Another is just tremendous. I've always liked Sean Penn, but he is doing work in this movie.

Documentary week here -

The silkworm doc - dunno why it’s taken me so long to get to this. Totally great and really captures the essence of “bandness “ - of course I’ve been spinning SKWM relentlessly every since

American Movie - lots of great moments in there and I laughed like a loon. Very touching too - loved the final section when they are all racing to the finish line - you can’t help but urge em on!

Weapons. A slow burner that reveals itself over different view points of the same situations... I really liked it.

Probably loved 99% of One Battle After Another without reservation, and the one short scene that was a little off to me is more ME than THE FILM.

It's like the helicopter chase scene from Goodfellas for 2.5 hours. Nice to see PTA engaging in a world not fully filled with dudes (I value his films about nearly anyone else's, but it's usually a lot of duuuuuuuuudes). Gonna see it again. A scene towards the end was something I haven't seen before, and it was the only time I've ever felt a difference in seeing something in Imax.
