If the tester works!cakes wrote: Sun Jul 13, 2025 10:00 pmThe tubes would be cool. Better get that tube tester!VaticanShotglass wrote: Sun Jul 13, 2025 9:07 pm The antique shop next to work got bought and new owners have marked things down to partly convert the place to a general store and ice cream place.
They’ve got some old ass electrical equipment no one has touched yet.
-vacuum tube tester
-webcor tube powered portable turntable with fold out speaker
-a small reel to reel player, don’t recall the brand
-a tool box full of vacuum tubes
-maybe a 60s or older oscilloscope
Certain that none of it works. Old owner makes everything up and was begrudged to sell anything, so it’s all been sitting there for decades.
It would probably just wind up as sorta neat looking junk in my hands, but if any of that sounds like the stuff of an interesting project or otherwise attractive, share your thoughts. The Webcor looks nice cosmetically.
Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
1012Talk me out of buying an 8 string bass (the type with octave strings, not some potato coffee table funk/jazz thing).
I've never played one. Give me the pros and cons.

1013Nope. I had a Kramer XL-8 for some time and I hate myself for selling it.Nate Dort wrote: Sun Jul 27, 2025 6:39 pm Talk me out of buying an 8 string bass (the type with octave strings, not some potato coffee table funk/jazz thing).

1014Yeah, I knew you had mentioned owning one of those before.Dr Tony Balls wrote: Sun Jul 27, 2025 6:50 pmNope. I've been casually looking for a vintage or reissue Hagstrom because those Kramers are getting stupid expensive these days.
But then this Washburn B-20 project popped up and now I'm wondering if I want to try my hand at a truss rod and fretboard replacement, or maybe have Jury look at it.

Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
1015Yeah do it. I’ve been waiting for one of those Chinese Hagstroms to pop up for cheap but don’t that often. I’ve had dreams about an 8-string Rick copy made by the custom guy in the UK.
I do wish Warmoth made those 8 string necks again, it would address the apparent quality issues I see in most of them out there - it just mostly looks like some kind of Chinese knockoff or lame music store junk. And the Musicvox ones are so ugly I could never.
Reminds me I’ve been wanting a Jazz bass with mutes and a fatass neck for a while, I think probably because of some youtube video I saw about the making of The White Album. Priorities!

Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
1016Had a bass collector in a band years back. He very specifically and purposefully applied his 8-string to a certain song. I thought it did something really cool and unique in terms of sonic space.
Also.... Enemymine.

Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
1017Do you even know how to use 4 strings on a bass?
Do you have long fingers, or at least a long palm?
Can you play like Victor Wooten?
Is your music going to improve with 4 extra bass strings?

Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
1018Like I said, I'm not talking about Wooten type shit. I'm trying to get my Mike Kunka on.

Those Kramer's are probably expensive, yeah. I've heard that a lot of them have neck warp issues, which i'd expect would be prevalent with 8 strings, but mine was fine.
That Washburn would be sick but that looks like a lot of work. Cool and challenging if you wanna do it yourself, but would be pricey from anyone else.
Of course you could always commission Mr. Jury to make you something.

This dude designed an 8 string bridge that screws onto a Fender bass, but then you're on your own for the neck, apparently? Unless you want a whole bass?
