I'll profess my love for TC Electronic again. This time, I had some extra money left over from selling off a bunch of equipment. I was considering picking up the Octaver and Flanger, maybe another couple of fun pedals... but decided to get the Plethora X3, which is basically all of their time effects in a single stomp box. I got some ideas for different boards to improve some songs and excited to make extra room on my board.

I had the X5 when I was still playing a lot of electric guitar. I didn't know of the X3, but that's a better format. I rarely needed more than 3 slots (though sometimes would add extra stupid stuff because they were available). The delays and short reverbs are particularly good.

I guess it's also a little less powered. With the X5, could you switch boards without delay? The X3 doesn't, which is not a big deal to me. I paired my board down to an echo, vibrato and trem to keep it simple, but i had a chorus and a phaser that I wanted to try to fit on. I only use maybe two effects at a time.

There was a bit of delay (maybe 2 seconds?) with the X5. I wouldn't count on switching boards in the middle of a song unless there's a long break.

It's cool having additional stuff like octave, harmonizer, compressor, etc.: stuff you might like for a part of one song, but not enough to justify owning a whole pedal for it.

Yes, exactly! I've really done a lot in the mixing of my guitars, it's made me think a little different about playing and writing.

Word on the Ampex list is that somebody's picking up all the MRL gear and continuing business.

Just checked the site:

Attention all MRL Customers and Dealers:
We have completed the move to our new offices, and are in the process of setting up the production system and engineering lab.
We plan to resume production of ¼" and ½” tapes in early February 2024. All tapes will continue to be backordered for at least two weeks, so we will be sending updates to affected customers.
Before resuming production, we will upgrade some key components of the automation system, and then make updated lab samples to confirm that the production system is properly calibrated.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Interim CEO, Jeff McKnight, at: jeff.mcknight@mrltapes.com
Man that's great news and a bit of a relief. When I got my MRL last year, their messaging was a lot more of going out of business and not at all an office move.

Been selling a few things and bought a used Aguilar Fuzzistor. Have had their TLC Compressor ever since I started playing bass, and I like the tank-like enclosure and simple classy artwork of this original line of pedals. I also generally like solid orange as a look when it comes to gear (big part of the appeal of Orange amps). So I bought a version 1 of the Fuzzistor and will now have a few different gain stage options for the bass geetar.

I bought yet another Tube Screamer. Arguably my favorite OD pedal, I couldn't resist getting the JHS Series 3 version. I guess you can say Found it dirt cheap on Reverb and I couldn't say no to an already inexpensive pedal. I already have a mini Ibanez Mini tube screamer, my first one. My absolute favorite has been the Walrus Voyager, it has something in the midrange that just gets to me. It's the lynchpin of my pedalboard. Anyway, I thought some of the mods on the Series 3 were interesting and I'd love to put it on a bass.

If you continue down your exploration of modded Tube Screamers, the best one I’ve tried on bass to date is the JHS Moonshine V2. Retains a nice low end because of the clean blend.

You might also check out the new Keeley Noble Screamer that integrates the TS and Nobels ODR into a single pedal where you can swap the tone controls and/or the clipping of each. (I think the ODR1 is a better bass pedal).

Neither of these are cheap, but more akin to the Voyager in price.
