When I first met him (late 1992 or early 1993, I guess), he was very humble and gracious. I don't think his personality changed much (if at all) as his band became more well-known. Some people were intimidated by his on-stage persona, but he was kind and approachable when not performing.
yeah, I met him, pretty early on, I would say between SBB, and Bonzi, and he would always come up to me and say hi, when they were playing at Lalapolluza, he singled me and the Dr out in the crowd, and played "Go Freeks Go" just for us... He was never really that intimidating on stage to me, it was more like watching a james brown-esc cyborg yelping out comands to the crowd who were his dancers, funny and energetic, creepy, but not scarey...
