My personal pick from those YouTube comments was 'The body would have been dumped in the sea and eaten by a shark, without a trace.'

Like, TEH OBVOUISLY, FAG.

If you want a higher class of kneejerk idiocy, of course the Daily Mail is the place to go. Some of the comments on this story are just mind-bending:

Looks to me as if this case is in the hands of Inspector Clouseau à la Portugaise.

- F, Cambridge

Oh this is just ludicrous! Who in their right mind would go to Portugal after this debacle? Not I!

- Linda, Cheltenham

This really makes me want to holiday in Portugal. Not.

- Paul Newton, Hove

I bet the Portugese police are just bullying the McCanns to get them to drop the whole thing and frighten them out of the country because their presence is affecting tourism. Frankly, Portugal has disgusted me over their handling of this business, if I was ever tempted to go there by God I'm over it now!

- Rose, Co Cork, Ireland

It apppears obvious that the Portugese police and legal system are inept.

- Chris, Dudley UK

This is Keystone Cops par excellence!

- John Gilbert, Dohar, Qatar

As long as we focus on the important issues like tourism and incompetent foreigners, this will all turn out fine.

If one of my children went missing I'd like to think that I have half the gumption that the McCann's have had in a attempt to keep their missing daughter's disapperance in the spotlight. They are obviouslys intelligent people with an understanding of the working of the media. Unfortunately, with this continued exposure comes the inevitable backlash.

Does anyone honestly believe that this couple would go to such lengths to conceal the alleged accidental death of one of their children? I can't and they would both have to be some sort of paths (sociopaths? maybe) to have planned it out or indeed winged it?

Also, they seem pretty firm in their religious views so can anyone really believe that they would meet the Pope and lie to his face?

I don't have a clue either way whether they did it or not, but all of the above is quite plausible.

It's a plausible scenario.

I find it hard to believe that the police seemingly have no other plausible lead. It seems genuinely strange to me that the police seem to have nothing else to go on; and I don't put that down to 'foreign police bungling'. It really seems like the lines of inquiry are severely limited, and the available evidence is meagre. That is unusual, in any crime, I think.

So I find it interesting that the Portuguese Police seem to have been following the parental lead as closely as they have; I don't believe they are incompetent, and I think they must have some reason to be searching the McCann's hire cars, for example.

If there is no evidence pointing to an abductor, but some evidence pointing to the parents, well, it's a logical way to go, isn't it?

I have not read that much about the case, I don't read the tabloids so I never bought into the whole frenzied approach and I don't want to get into analysing evidence but regarding the car, what's being implied here? that they disposed of the their child's body 20 odd days after she was killed. Is this a joke? That family have been under 24 hours-a-day surveilance since the story broke, do you think they would have had time to do that?

I can undertand people getting bored with the coverage but that's no reason to start fucking the family over.

so intelligent they went off and left their three very young children alone, unattended for the evening.

anyway, i digress....

Actually, one point that has never been raised about any possible kidnap/abduction theory is why only kidnap one child - i mean, if you had the opportunity in the first place, why not take all three kids???
