Rick Reuben wrote:LA Times articleBritain-based webzine Record of the Day has been conducting a poll to see how much fans paid for the album. Managing director Paul Scaife reports more than 4,000 have voted, and while 5 and 10 British pounds ($10 to $20 U.S.) appear to be the popular price points, more than 2,800 claimed to have paid less than $10.
Interesting. Many people seem happy to pay close to what they would normally pay, I'm guessing because they think it's going straight to Radiohead.
this is called an Honor System. it was used lots of times before. some bloggers also do it. it always work, people by defect are honest. its odd, but it works.
that means that about 90% of the people pay the 'expected' amount of cash for it.

You know how they're asking fans to name their price? (
www.inrainbows.com ) Well, I thought, ok, I'll buy it for £0.00, then
IF I LIKE IT I'll pay them a fiver or something and download it again,
or buy the mega 'discbox' package (£40) which includes two pieces of
vinyl, a cd, extra tracks and a book, etc etc... anyway,
moral/cost/other issues aside, I downloaded it, and the whole album is
at 160kbps. Rubbish, eh? Rubbish!!! Surely mp3s only start to sound
half decent at 192kbps...? I'm amazed that a band like Radiohead are
being this sloppy... I'm sure lots of their fans won't care, or even
notice, but the fact of the matter is that unless you are cloth-eared,
160kbps mp3s - when listened to through a decent set of speakers -
sound shit.
Maybe the bit rates go up if you pay them more money...?
160kbps?!?! What the fuck?

i listened to it in my house (with my subpar monitors) and headphones and it sounds fine to me.
the 10song album in 160kbps is 49mb. it´s a small download.
it could be best to put it in 256, but it will be A LOT MORE bandwith.
or maybe using oggs.

You can get perfectly good sound quality at 160kbps, it just needs to be properly encoded - which I imagine they are, since it was done profesionnally and everything. Plus mp3s are still mp3s they will never be as good as wav that's just how it is!
Who sent you that email anyway?

i've listened to it twice through. i like it. way less pretentious than their last album.
it's small in scope. there's hardly any yorke-ish wailing on it (always a plus.) it isn't too nigel godrich-esque.
having said that, i expected more. it plays like a pleasant collection of b-sides.

so when it is actually released, buy a cd for full price and rip it at whatever rate you like. it's free, man. what do you expect?
i've only listened so far through my computer but i'm taking it home tonight so i'll see how it sounds through a decent amp and monitors.
of course, it will sound nothing like the vinyl records. can't wait to hear those.
mama clortho wrote:but no, they continue with the crying over boring music.
they've always done that, that's radiohead. thom yorke can't sing. haven't you figured that out? i guess you've never liked them. why did you expect to begin now?

This isn't so bad so far.
For Radiohead, it is pretty dry...at least the first four songs.
