First off, he was quoted as later saying he didn't know Ledger.

Second, I doubt Nicholson even spoke to or met Ledger about the role of the Joker or the Ambien sleeping pills that Ledger was taking. Unless that can be proven by a detailed interview with Nicholson in the future.

Third, Nicholson was just coming out of a restaurant. He was taken aback by the reporters comments and obviously had not heard that Ledger had died since the news was just broken that day. His first words are "that is awful" followed by a question "what did he die of?". After the reporters say he died of an overdose Nicholson thinks for a minute and says " I warned 'em" He could have been refering to anyone who takes a drug like Ambien, not specifically Ledger. Nicholson elaborated in statements later on that he had warned people about the side effects of Ambien.

Fourth, the reporters laugh when he says " I warned 'em...or "him"...and Nicholson responds with a grin or nervous chuckle. He was responding to the reporters laughing like idiots and also being slightly intoxicated.

God I love Jack Nicholson.

It's possible Ledger was not finished with some of his work on The Dark Night. That would suck if it's true and they have to rework the film. Linky
