Ok, I'll share my little Fugazi story...
So I was in like tenth grade, playing in what was essentially a bad death-metal band, getting ready to record a split seven-inch with our friends' band.
We were Northern Virginia-based and were way down with Fugazi, Frodus, and bands of that ilk so figured the thing to do was to record at Inner Ear. So I just called up and booked some time with Don Zientara, right?
The day we're booked to record, I call up around 5pm to confirm, and Don's like, "yeah, we're still on, but why don't you come in a little later? This session's gonna go longer than I thought."
So, for whatever reason, we pretty much get there early anyway. We ring the buzzer. There's like, eleven of us, mind you, wearing Minor Threat t-shirts, etc., and who answers the door but Ian!
The first thing he says is, "Wow, are you guys a Ska band or something?" We all laugh nervously and just kinda file in. Then we're sitting there in the lounge, where the walls are completely covered in pretty much the awesomest releases Dischord ever put out. It's totally fuckin' crazy.
Guy keeps walking past us carrying a bunch of gear and shit out to their truck, not saying too much. But Brendan comes right down and sits next to me (maybe sensing I'm the drummer) and asks me if I'm gonna watch SNL that night and that he's stoked because Jamiroquai is the musical guest. Basically, I'm shitting myself because I'm like 15 and this dude is one of my heroes but I try to play it cool. Eventually, they finish up and politely say bye and that's it.
Anyway, it was pretty huge to us at the time and we all still laugh about it today. Turns out they were tracking a little record called 'Red Medicine.'

well it beats the story about them being too stoned to turn off their guitars at the end of that one long jam

I assure you, he was serious. I actually liked Jamiroquai. Nice groove.

You just gave me a Proust moment...
A comment from a vocalist I used to play in a band with, who said "Fugazi are way overrated". Now, I know that statement is just plain wrong, to call Fugazi "overrated" seems an inappropriate observation for some reason, but I can't quite articulate why. Is it because they are such an unassuming band?
Please PRFers, help me out...what response should I have given him?
By the way: NOT CRAP.
Why?
When it was released, the opening bass line to Waiting Room changed my world. Since then, they really have done no wrong. Besides which (and I know this has nothing to do with Fugazi), seeing Ian Mackaye hold up that note from Rollins in the Minutemen "Jam Econo" doc. puts a lump in my throat every time.
