A Thousand Leaves, meanwhile, is 85% shit. Shitty shitty shit. Absolutely their worst album.

fuck no 1000 leaves is fantastic all the way through, aside form the one bad Lee song
The title in particular track is great

I agree with Marsup on this one. 1000 Leaves was probably their best album of the 90's (Washing Machine was a close 2nd). Theres a few Kim moments I dont like on that album, but I do like the Lee song a lot.

If you had to pick any of the 90's albums, its 1000 Leaves. I do like Wharton Tiers as a producer too.

NYC Ghosts and Flowers is one of the bands lessor efforts.

A Thousand Leaves is a beautiful autumnal album as its title suggests.

I have mixed feelings about Washing Machine but If I had to pick the second one from their 1990s recordings it would be that one.

Murray Street still didn't grow on me. I rarely listen to it.

NYC Ghosts & Flowers has few nice moments only. Not enough for me.

Are we thinking of the same album? A Thousand Leaves doesn't have a title track. It does, however, have "Female Mechanic Now On Duty." God, I hate that song.

Really, apart from "Sunday," "Karen Koltrane," "snare, girl" and the live version of "Wildflower" from the Tibetan Freedom Concert, I can't give this era of SY any of my time. It's just no good.
Hey. My name's Josh.

Gotcha. Is that in the lyrics? I've listened to the damn thing so few times I don't even know.

No, but the record was supposed to be called 'Hits of sunshine' up untill the last minute

I agree - wonderful album. "Heather Angel" is my favorite.

But help me out here - what is it about NYC G&F that people hate? I just don't get it. Somebody help me understand, because it sounds like prime if uncommonly wierd Sonic Youth to me.

I honestly don't understand how a fan of Sonic Youth could fail to appreciate this album. It's the only other thing in their catalog that remotely resembles the Sonic Youth/Confusion Is Sex/Kill Yr Idols era. With some beat poetry, fine. The poetry ain't no great shakes, but it's not embarrassing. It's mostly great, especially the title track, "Renegade Princess" and "StreamXsonic Subway". And what is really wrong with the rest?

Oh whatever. I've always been alone on this one.

I totally agree. Everybody seems to hate that album, where I thought it's one of their best in recent memory. It's their least "sell-out" sounding record that they put out since signing Geffen. The highlight is the title track for me. Plus anything that Pitchfork hates (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/r ... ts-flowers) has to have something going for it.

Ha, that reveiw sorta brought me a warm & fuzzy feeling all over. Thanks for the link.

My Sonic Youth records will get fewer spins in the future then they have in the past, but I still think they are a great band. And NYCG&F was a harmless record by my judgement, certainly not worth getting one's own panties in bundle. There are some clunkers for sure but I remember 'Free City Rhymes' being a fine tune.
