It's already had the pickups replaced with Fender's new reissue CuNiFe Wide Range pickups. Pretty stoked. Been wanting to do that to one of these reissues they only made for a couple of years (or with a MIM one). The FSR version has a beefier neck with bigger frets and a 9.5 radius. This puts all of the specs even closer to my long-ago sold/missed 1980 Telecaster Deluxe - but with the addition of an f-hole and a pickup switch that I won't accidentally hit.
What kind of pots are in that bad boy? I've heard that the WRHBs came with 1meg pots back in the day, but that Fender says to install their reissues with 500k pots.

I'm wondering the same. I'll report back when I change strings. The CME guy that contacted me about it could only tell me the pickups were CuNiFe but didn't have pot values. I checked the pickups with a multimeter (both read around 11k) and they sound right, but I bet the pots are 500k. My vintage Deluxe had 1MEG. [EDITED] to say my vintage Tele Custom also had 1MEG as well, at least they two original pots were. The other two on the single coil side had been changed to 250K alphas.

tommy wrote: Tue Sep 07, 2021 2:07 pm I should have noted that I have ZERO experience with Squier JM pickups. My advice is mostly for traditional US JM pickups in the 7K range with the wide short bobbins. The MIJ ones are the WORST. Both the MIJ JM and Jag have the thinnest squealing pickups I've ever heard. I'd hope the Mascis ones are better. In fact, aren't they supposed to be more like P90s on that model?
The pickups I pulled from my Squier JM could've easily fit in a regular strat style pickup enclosure. Taller than a "real" JM pickup and the winding didn't come close to the edges of the bobbin. It was essentially a 14k cheap strat pickup dressed up in a MJ-esque enclosure. If that doesn't sound particularly attractive in theory, I wasn't wild about it in practice either.

In regards to the CuNiFe, I got one of those last year and they sound fucking awesome! I can't remember for sure what value pot I used, but pretty sure it was 500k.

I made an offer for these that I thought was too low, but it was accepted. So now I'm in the market for a Vistalite kick (preferably 24") if anyone has any leads.

Follow up:
I pulled the pickguard when I changed strings and they either left or changed the pots to 250K audio (not sure what this 2012 shipped with originally, but 250K seems an odd choice). The pickups are visually confirmed as the new CuNiFe though - backing up my ohm meter readings. After some research into the original 1970s wiring diagrams and Fender part numbers, it appears the humbucker version of the thinline used a 1M audio volume and a 1M linear tone pot originally. The bridge pickup sounds just about perfect with the 250K and the neck pickup is a little dark with the tone knob wide open - so I think I'm going to change the pots out but can't decide whether I'm going with 1M or 500K. Moving some questions about pot value influence to another thread.

250K ohm was standard for vintage Fender strats and teles.
DIY and die anyway.

Well, yeah, but not most of the Teles made 1972 - 1981 (Tele Deluxe, Tele Custom, Tele Thinline) and certainly not typical for humbuckers of any brand.
Correct, 500k ohm with humbuckers. But 250k was the standard for single coils.

I'm pretty sure Fender only ever used 1meg around the time they introduced things like the TBX and noiseless pickup sets, etc.
Then again, at any time they may have got a good deal on batches of 1M pots and just rolled with it.
DIY and die anyway.
