One of the best monosynths of all time but they feel cheap as hell. I had one for many years. I'm pretty happy with my Behringer Pro-1 though I've been eyeballing the Prophet 5 reissue, which I can only rationalize by selling enough other synths to cover the cost and reduce space usage. Two down, Three to go.

Excellent price though, because they were already $800+ a decade ago.

I remember one weekend in fall 2001 where almost every single band at multiple different shows had at least one on stage (Les Savy Fav, Mars Volta, Built to Spill, Ugly Cassanova), didn't take long for that pedal to become ubiquitous!

I'm not going to watch that whole video of Rhett noodling through three delay pedal. I mean, that's kinda my job anyway. I'm here to say that I made the Cosmos Echo model that has been in Helix products and is now in the DL4mkII. I went absolutely nuts on that model. I had a 101, 201, and 501 at my disposal so I was able to analyze all three for sound artifacts. There are all sorts of things going on behind the scenes in the model; pre emph, distortion, and de emph in the tape path, tonality change based on tape speed, the ability it include or exclude the preamp on the dry path, and so on.

Perhaps my favorite feature (which is only in the Helix products) is a virtual tape splice. On a real space echo, the tape splice for the tape loop will sometimes get hung up briefly on the tape transport and it put in a little blip of pitch shift. I love this crazy chaos, so I added it to the model. Every 10 to 40 seconds (depending on delay time, which correlated to tape speed), there is a quick blip in the delay line. There is a "splice" knob that can adjust the depth of the tape splice pitch blip.

It was a bit divisive when the model first came out because the default was just to have it on just a little bit. People got confused as to why there was a "glitch" in the space echo and even reported it as a big. This secretly made me very happy. I modeled a "wrong" behavior that happens in a less than perfect physical unit and some people got it and loved it, some people got it and turned it off, and some people just thought WRONG and had to report it. It's kind of like the stories of people returning the My Bloody Valentive "Loveless" cassette in 1991 because they thought it was damaged and warped. Finally, the powers that be asked to have this parameter set to 0 by default when users load the model. Boo!

Anyway, I really like what I came up with, and I hope my post reflects the time, effort, and intention I put into making these very specific guitar widgets.

I stopped watching that video about 2 minutes in because everything but the Boss was noticeably clipping in the effect loop. Seriously, what percentage of people even use the effects loop? It takes additional cables and creates an entire extra signal chain. Hell, I don't even have an amp that has one.

Also, that's a really great story. There are always going to be people that see some features as a bug.

I've been working for Line 6 for over 10 years now. In the process, I've also ended up working for Yamaha and Ampeg. I think it's only in the last few years that I've been able to rally show my full self in the products. I came out of the DIY punk and indie world, like everyone here on the PRF. We often love the harsh and absurd. FMSteve has made a life's body of work as a musician playing guitar through a PA speaker. That's a universal "wrong" in the guitar world. Sure, we're not all noise and chaos, but it's definitely part of this music community more than it is part of other communities.

And there's the DIY part. Many of us here are recording engineers, and we usually work in studios that we have built ourselves; cobbled together from great deals, used gear, and the discarded good of businesses who couldn't cut it. We don't have to worry about cutting it because we never wanted to be a business. We're losing money and having a blast.

So now I'm modeling my own gear, originally crafted for me and our community. I'm just inventing amps in the digital world that work. I'm trying to get the weirdo guitar players to embrace that there is fun and chaos in what had previously been thought of as perhaps gear that is "not for us." I was shocked to see Denison using a Helix as his pedalboard. Very pleased, but very shocked.

So yeah, I agree, I have a pretty great job.

Honestly, I just couldn't get past that there was probably one seriously determined person at Boss that just kept putting their foot down about bringing that "Dual..." version of the Space Echo back better than ever and in the "DS-1... form factor.

The one that was on Pepper!'s live rig back in the day always sounded pretty good, but I really thought that Boss had thrown the towel in on that one.
