I think this one wins the soar contest though.

There was (is?) this thing called the "demoscene", groups of computerfolk (programmers, digital artists, musicmakers) composing 3d-animations with accompanying music, typically written in a tracker and played off whatever soundcard was available (computer game music on PCs early on worked like this, it would sound different on different devices).

People also shared such songs on "musicdisks" (usually self-contained programs playing back the music). This here is one example, played on the Gravis Ultrasound.

I don't know if there were really a purpose of these "demos", I think they just shared them with each other, sort of showcasing maybe for hackerteams and such, and just making cool stuff.

Anyway those cards could make some insanely nasty sounds. The first track off this Psychic Monks comp expresses this in full. Composer is Andrew Sega aka Necros, who also made music for the Crusader: No Remorse game, and a few songs for the Unreal soundtrack.

Epic is all I can say.

Before the Dawn Heals Us is an embarrassment of riches what with the sublime floaty and soaring soundtracks for driving off the edge of the planet (the only pro for a flat Earth).

Both of the following outros are extremely my blues.

What I enjoy most about this period of M83 is how moonstruck, starry-eyed, and vulnerable the music is. Just like me

just noticed I shared "Robot World" from Bailter Space twice in this thread; ain't that some shit. Would love to cover that fiberglass insulated gem but can't make heads nor tails of the lyrics and probably wouldn't be able to capture that glassy gossamer vibe anyway. Emotions got me feeling needlessly verbose.

I was watching Deadpool 2 for funzies and rediscovered the glory of this track...

The musicianship is damn solid as well.

PS, prep for maximum 80s video...
