I'm only 21 now and my parents were very young when I was born. My earliest memories of loving music (about 5 to 8 years old) were riding around town in the backseat of my father's piece of shit camero listening to Nevermind, The Downward Spiral, Purple Rain, and Ten. Total grunge baby. It paved the way to me listening to a loooot of bullshit until I discovered Sonic Youth Big Black, and My Bloody Valentine in the 9th grade.

Zeppelin. That was shortly after my older brother forced me to listen to IV in it's entirety behind locked doors. He did this because he found a David Bowie mix tape a friend had made for me on my bedroom dresser. Apparently, he thought listening to Bowie would make me queer...

The Carpenters...

I blame my parents. They had a terrible record collection. And they made me play Violin for years & years... it stunted my musical growth from an early age.

But the first actual album I bought becuase I was totally into the music would have been Metallica's Ride the Lightning.

I didn't write that! Heh.

Yeahh.. after I reread what I wrote, I figured I'd get some comments on that..

I grew up listening to all yr typical grunge shit (Alice in Chains, STP, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc)- My parents just happened to also be big Prince fans- so I threw that one in there as well.

CLARIFY!

Devo. Saw them on Saturday Night Live and I freaked out.

The Raspberries. The first album I bought was by The Supremes, but Fresh by the Raspberries was my first obsessive band album, and I got it when it was their most current album. I like Side Three better, though.

My Dad had lots of Surf records, the Beach Boys and Dick Dale were my favorites.

I guess thats why I am such an indie panty-waist now.

Prince is grunge? Who knew?

Let's see. Earliest songs I can remember liking enough to like the band:

"Mommy's Little Monster" by Social Distortion
"Wild in the Streets" by the Circle Jerks
"Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes
"Flying High Again" by Ozzy Osbourne
"Rescue" by Echo and the Bunnymen
"Goody Two Shoes" by Adam and the Ants

...and, strangely enough, "Love's been a Little Bit Hard on Me" by Juice Newton. I think I may have had a crush on her and her hair, rather than the song. This song did not lead to a love of Juice Newton, however, I did own the single (probably still do, as I've never thrown away a record.)
