I saw Brendan playing about a year ago with a band so forgettable I've forgotten who they were. They were boring, derivative shit, and I'm guessing it was a money gig for him, he appeared to be under direction to play boring shit too. It was like watching Animal on the muppets suffering thru playing a set with Air Supply. Every once in a while I see Andrew taking his ten-foot strides thru the streets of wellington, but I haven't seen him playing anywhere.

On the upside, I've got a friend who's nearly finished a video for the 'hoff, it's a single song from a live performance circa early 1998 and its easily the most intimidating, brutal two-piece performance I've ever seen in my life - LONG LIVE THE 'HOFF.

keep in mind this isn't in order, really. and these are just with people who come to mind.

John "Drumbo" French (beefheart)
Elvin Jones (Coltrane)
George Hurley (minutemen)
Danny Heifetz (Mr. Bungle)
Rey Washam (scratch acid, rapeman)
Ted Parsons (Swans)
Jaki Liebezeit (can)
John Bonham (led zeppelin)
Stephen Perkins (jane's addiction)
Phill Calvert (birthday party) (Zoo Music Girl, anyone?)
Mick Harvey (birthday party) (for dead joe and Hamlet alone)
Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown)
Al Jackson (Al Green)
Greg Errico (Sly and the Family Stone)
Stewart Copeland (The Police)
John 'Jabo' Starks (James Brown)
Tiki Fulwood (Funkadelic) (Super Stupid alone blows away most of John Bonham's shit)
Jerome Brailey (Funkadelic)
Danny Carey (Tool) (I dislike this band, but the guy is legitimately awesome)
Mick Harris (napalm death)
Don Christensen (contortions)
Ringo Starr (beatles)
Charlie Watts (stones)
Keith Moon (the who)
Bill Ward (black sabbath)
Britt Walford (slint)
Stephen Morris (joy division)
Bruce Smith (the pop group)
Bill Bruford (yes, king crimson)

that is all I can think of for right now.

You've seen all these guys? That's pretty impressive.

oh.

whoops.

it was late, I was tired and I was skimming. I see best drummers and a train of thought got started.

I don't know who the best drummer I've seen is...now I feel stupid.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

absolutely amazing.

Blake Fleming. Yeah, he's great. I think he may have a solo record coming out?
The guy who 'replaced' him (in the Psychic Paramount) is no slouch either.
Christian Vander is probably my favourite drummer to watch live.
I saw Steve Reich & Musicians perform 'Drumming' last year, which isn't kit drumming but is one of my favourite pieces of music ever, and was even more powerful in the flesh. I can't think of any setting where stamina and accuracy are shown off better, and in a less flashy way, it demands a complete lack of ego and an absurdly good technique from the players.
Tomi from Circle/Pharaoh Overlord, again with the understatement.
I really like Atsuo from Boris too. Kinda normal playing on the 'heavy rock' stuff but I love what he does in Flood and At Last.
Andee from A Minor Forest/P.E.E./Ticwar
Dave from Guapo/Miasma
Local to me, Neil Turpin (as previously mentioned) and Paul Hession are both great.

I'm pretty thankful I've seen all these people live. I want to see Bill Bruford and Charles Hayward play at some point before either of them gives up...

In seriousness, my Dad told me a story about being in a jazz club somewhere, sometime and this woman got on stage and started playing the saxaphone like a demon. Then she started drumming like some fiend. Her name? CHAKA KHAN.

My Dad also told me he was Chubby Checkers drummer when he was younger which I believed so, who knows. He's full of fantastical rock and roll 'legends'.

If anyone can prve to me that this thepry alone might hold water, I'd be very grateful. Also, feel free to snort with derision.
