bdm wrote:Seriously thinking it might be time to quit the whole amateur indie rock band guy thing. Its starting to feel silly and embarrassing as I roll steadily through my 40s. No one wants to see middle aged guys get sweaty and play loud except other middle aged indie rock guys and most of the time those middle aged indie rock guys can t / don t want to leave the house for a show or band practice. You could always take a break, pursue other interests, and come back to it later. And if you don't come back and you end up getting involved in something else that eclipses playing music, it could be just as rewarding, if not more. One of the reasons I got deeper into cinephelia in my early twenties was that I realized playing in bands, and keeping up with band culture in general, was more of a "young man's game" for the most part. I wanted to get serious about something that could dovetail a bit better into being old, essentially. But that's not to say there aren't plenty of great "lifer"-type rockers who've aged well and kept playing and releasing records. I just knew personally at some point that making music would never be more than a hobby for me and wasn't something I wanted to base my whole identity around. Somehow I knew not to put all of my proverbial eggs in that basket as I'd seen a few people who had and they ended up kind of disappointed with life because the world, which once seemed at their feet, just kind of moved on.Dave N. wrote:^^^I get to thinking this periodically, but then I remember that I don t have a whole lot riding on it. It s simply a thing I do.That's my take too. And it's just one of several things, and probably the last thing I need to have validated by the world in order to do occasionally.

Yeah, there are musicians who play shows well into their eighties (and beyond), so it's not without precedent to stick with it.If you're enjoying yourself, and creating music gives you a path forward, then who cares what "the world" thinks?

You aren't alone in "wanting to be the weakest link," FM bdm. I've often thought my creative life would be a lot more fun if someone else were pulling most of the weight and I had a more "submissive" role (no, that's not a cry for a sado-masochistic relationship!).When a person is seemingly always the one initiating the projects they're involved in, and doing most of the writing, and they have to be their own secretary/graphic designer/"publicist"/engineer/etc., it can really feel like a grind after a while, even if they're a workaholic type and a lot of it comes naturally. It's a normal thing to want an easier life as time goes on, to want to be more of easygoing team member than a headstrong boss/instigator with ample things to worry about. But for a lot of creative people, including a number of famous artists, they don't really have a choice in this matter. If a person isn't the mastermind and willing to wear a ridiculous number of hats, the work ends up being crap, or nothing gets done and often the whole endeavor collapses.I know this situation all too well, trust me. So, in the nicest possible sense, join the club, pal.

Someone will come along. In the meantime, makeMusic. I've always found it strange that the impulse is somehow tied to performance. Like ego wise. Just make work. Record it . And make more work until someone comes along.

Compositions/arrangements are more important than people sweating/ clapping for you. Those things are amazing for many reasons. But That's my bias.

I still feel like I have my best writing ahead of me. As long as that happens, I'll keep going. When it stops, I'll stop.
